James Rittenhouse Obituary

James Rittenhouse, 91, died peacefully on Sunday morning, Aug. 31, 2008, at the Westerly Nursing Home.
Born in Stonington Borough on Sept. 25, 1916, he was a lifelong resident of the Town of Stonington.
After serving in World War II, Jim made his career as a draftsman, retiring from EB in 1984 after 23 years of service.
Through the years, he was active in the United Church of Stonington, Asylum (now Coastal) Lodge #57 of Stonington, the Chorus of Westerly, the Stonington Visiting Nurses Association, and the American Legion of Stonington. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, traveling and music. His violin playing was legendary among family and friends.
He leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Charlotte (nee Tuite), and their children Susan R. Joseph and her husband Peter of Upper Darby, Pa., David and Judy Lennon of Middlefield, Mass., and Stephen and his wife, Allyson of Meriden, Conn. Jim had one grandson, Andrew James, also of Meriden. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Jim was predeceased by two sisters, Arvilla Stewart and Jennie Reynolds. Jim will be remembered by those who knew him for his big smile, friendliness and his ever-present sense of humor.
Calling hours will be held at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the United Church of Stonington at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. Burial will follow at Stonington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to the United Church of Stonington, 67 Main Street, Stonington, CT 06378.

Mr. Rittenhouse was always kind hearted and had a great big heart. I remember spending lots of time with him and Mrs. Rittenhouse in our fellowship hall at the Church of Stonington.
