George Savin Obituary

George J. Savin, 80, of Stonington, beloved husband of 57 years to the late Irene (Rogers) Savin, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at The Westerly Hospital.
Born on March 1, 1928 in Southampton, N.Y., he was the son of the late John and Bridget (Mulcahey) Savin.
George and his family moved to Stonington when he was a child. He attended local schools and was an exceptional athlete in football, baseball, and track at Stonington High School. One of his proudest accomplishments as an athlete was winning the state championship in the 220-yard dash in 1946.
George enlisted with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, from 1947-1948, where he joined the Army's football team. He was honorably discharged in 1948 returning to Stonington where he played semi-pro football with the former Red Devils for two years.
George married his beloved wife Irene in St. Mary Church on Jan. 14, 1950. Sadly, she predeceased him in September 2007.
In 1954, George became a member of the Stonington Police Department, and after two years as a supernumerary, he was promoted to officer, and was later promoted to sergeant and eventually lieutenant, retiring in 1983. During his years as a police officer, George remained active in athletics, coaching Stonington's first Pee Wee football team and St. Mary's basketball team for many years. He also founded the Stonington High School Athletic Boosters Club and was a member of the Neptune Fire Co. After his retirement, from the police department, George was a security officer with EB for five years.
He leaves his six children, Kathy Fitzpatrick and her husband, Peter, of Bancroft, Maine, Jack Savin of Pahoa, Hawaii, Linda Salovitz and her husband, David of Pawcatuck, Ellie Dunn and her husband, Gerry, of Pawcatuck, Paula Pucci of Westerly, and Scott Savin of Pawcatuck; a sister, Amy Clark of Mystic; four beloved grandchildren, Jonathan and Kara Salovitz, Patsy Dunn and Alexa Pucci; his mother-in-law, Louise Rogers of Westerly, as well as many relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Maurice Savin; and two sisters, Doris Rupp and Mary Savin.
Funeral services will begin Monday, Nov. 10, at 9 a.m. from the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Stonington. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Stonington High School Athletic Boosters Club, 176 South Broad St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379.

My sincerest thoughts to the Savin family and George’s extended family; George was a proud and confident person, proud of his family and his community and the accomplishments of those around him. George fondly remembered his service to our nation and was encouraging to others who served. His passing leaves a definitive gap in the ranks of the members of America’s Greatest Generation.
