Purce passed away in Eureka in the loving arms of his daughter, Moki, February 6, 2008, after an extended illness. He was a quiet, sensitive, and loving father with a great appreciation of nature.
He was the third of six children born to Thelma Lovelace and Roy L. Purcell, in Mammoth, Utah, on September 9, 1921. His father was sent to Brigham Young University as the son of the ruling family (Alii) in SAMOA. He became a great orator and debater, whose picture still graces the yearbooks of BYU.
At age 17, Daddy joined the Army. He was stationed in Honolulu and survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1942. After the war, with the GI Bill, he was accepted to the University of Utah and graduated with a Teaching Credential. There he met and married Beverly Thomas and had two daughters. In 1953 Daddy went to work for Eureka City Schools, teaching history and coaching the Eureka High Swim Team to victories all over the State. He finished his teaching career at Zane Jr. High in the P.E. Dept. where he will be remembered for his 21 undefeated teams and his gift of coaching young men and women to be the best.
His son, Farrell Jr., was born on Mothers’ Day, 1961, and was his pride and joy.
Daddy was a 50 year member of the Arcata Masons and helped to build their present building. But one of Daddy’s greatest loves was BOWLING! He was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame and has three beautiful rings for his three perfect games of 300!
He is survived by his present wife of 30 years, Ruth (Luka) Purcell; her children, Pat Viser, Marge Lawrence, and Rich Whipple and their families; his daughters, Moki Valerie and her husband Mario Aguero, and Samantha Keats; his grandchildren, Gina Beattie and her husband Troy, and Alex Keats; and his great grandchildren, Mason and Madilynn Beattie. He also had a wealth of nephews and nieces and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Farrell W. Purcell; his brothers and sisters, Wesley, Luana, Lucky, Carol Jean, Kline and ArtisRey; and a nephew, Ted Purcell.
There will be a celebration of his life at 2:00 PM on Wednesday February 13, 2008, at the Banana Hut at Redwood Acres in Eureka. All of his friends, family and former students are invited to gather and share stories. He will be laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery, Punch Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii at a future date. Arrangements are under the care of Paul’s Chapel in Arcata.

There was a post on Facebook about the Myrtlewood lounge the other day, and I remembered that Coach Purcell had owned it at one time. I was so sorry to hear that he had passed away. I remember him from school, he was always very friendly, and had such a love for life. Rest in peace, coach.

I'm almost 60 & every once in awhile I think of one of my favorite teachers, but could not remember his name!!
It just came to me today..
I looked him up & found his obituary..
Mr. Purcell was so sweet & kind.. He new I was she & he never called on me to speak out loud..I was to shy to even talk to him lol..but he knew, he always greeted me with a smile.. I don't ever remember being grumpy..
I do remember he smelled so nice & always very well groomed..
It seems like he was a gum chewer..I could be wrong but I remember always chewing gum...
What a good man he was..
I sure wish I could of chatted with him in my adulthood to let him know he was the Best!!
Rest in peace Mr. Coach Purcell

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of "Mr. Purcell" (Kids of the fifties and sixties always called our friends parents Mr. and Mrs.) I love all you guys so much. Sammie (Pam) was (is) my best friend, and Val (Moki) and Little Farrell (Boy-Boy)and Bev xoxoxo (My second Mom) were my best friends too. "Big Farrell" or Mr. Purcell, was like a second Dad to me growing up. I have great memories of camping trips, catching giant, pollywogs, strawberry/chocolate malts, riding in his jeep, with the doors off, and riding up to the "cabin" in the back of his El Camino, and Swimming. (man, was he into swimming!) He inspired me in JR. High to do my best in Gymnastics and to run my fastest, because he said I was good at it. I had a crush on him when I was little, because he was so handsome, and that really bugged, his daughter, my best friend, Sam. I will always have wonderful memories of a wonderful man and an incredable family. My Sympathy, love, and Prayers go out to you all. With Love and Respect, Your Friend, Lydia

Coach,
I had the chance for having "Coach" in my life when I was growing up and went through Zane Junior High School. There never a time when Coach didn't have a momment of his time or a positive word for anyone of his students. Many a time I tried to win a game of ping pong with the "Coach" but to no luck!!! Best Coach I ever had!!!!!!

Dear Purcell Family,
i was sad to hear of Mr. Purcell's passing. He was to me in my childhood memory a quite giant. A nice man and a father who's family really loved him. I remember his quick smile and his 4 wheel drive.
My sympathy to Val and Pam.
