James Lee Obituary

J ames F. Lee, 91, of Amherst Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
Born Aug. 16, 1915, in Plymouth, he was a son of the late J. Frank and Nora (Dailey) Lee.
Jim was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and continued his education at Bucknell Junior College.
A few years after graduating, he went to work for the Times Leader, where he was a police reporter, and wrote obituaries and general local news until 1942, when he joined the U.S. Navy.
During World War II, he wrote articles about actions of his destroyer in North Atlantic convoy operations for the “Stars and Stripes,” and “Yank,” the armed forces’ newspaper and magazine.
Jim returned to the Times Leader after the war. Over the course of 50 years with the newspaper, he was a reporter, sports editor, assistant editor and editor. He retired in 1985 as editorial page editor.
He was honored with several awards for journalism by the Associated Press and Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors.
Jim was a member of St. Therese’s Parish, Wilkes-Barre.
His wife, Patricia Shovlin Lee, died April 2, 2003; a brother, William J. and sisters, Eleanore Maloney and Mary C. Lee also preceded him in death.
Surviving are daughter, Nora Mary Lee of Wilkes-Barre; son, James F. Jr. and his wife Carol Lee of Larksville; and granddaughters, Christine and Tonya Lee.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from M.J. McLaughlin Company, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Therese’s Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call Sunday 4 to 7 p.m.
