Antonin Smrcka Obituary
On August 14, 2017, Antonin Klement Josef Smrcka , passed away joining the love of his life and soul mate, Solanges Smrcka. Born June 17, 1931, in Humpolec, formerly Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic. I
In World War II, he fought for Czech independence as part of the Czech Resistance. In 1949, at the age 18, he immigrated to Quebec, Canada. At an international ball, he met and later married Solanges Domerson, a nursing student from Haiti.
With a background in chemistry he worked for Allied Chemical, he left his work as analyst at Allied Chemical to teach Chemistry at the High School in Cite-des-Jeunes, Vaudreuil Pavilion High School. After completing his Master's in Educational Foundations at McGill University the family moved to New Mexico in 1972.
While completing his doctorate in Educational Foundations at the University of New Mexico, he taught at several high schools in the area including St. Pius High School, Menaul High School and Grants High School. After finishing his doctoral degree, he taught at University of New Mexico and later became Vice President of Business Affairs at the University of Albuquerque and College of Santa Fe.
Dr. Smrcka and his wife, Solanges founded the American University of Les Cayes in Haiti, which continues to be in operation to this day. At the end of their tenure in Haiti, they taught in the Czech Republic after his 40 year exile. Upon his return to New Mexico, he worked with Century University, one of the early online universities, and helped countless students all over the world obtain their masters and doctoral degrees.
As per his wishes his body was donated to science were it will be used as part of medical education, he continues to teach others. His remains will be returned to the family plot in the Czech Republic at the end of the academic year.

All are welcome to join their daughter Julienne to share their stories and memories at his Celebration of Life at Albuquerque Press Club, 201 Highland Park Circle SE, on November 11th, 2017 from 4:00-7:00pm.
