Nancy Hines Obituary
Nancy Hines
Nancy Burk
Totty Hines, 77, died on October 22, 2022 at home on hospice surrounded by her family in Los Ranchos, NM.
Nancy was born in Richmond, Virginia to John Carlton Totty and Lucy Carlisle Burk and raised in Bon Air on Jahnke Road, sharing a driveway with great neighbors and friends, the Nolting family. She graduated from Stuart Circle Nursing School in 1965 and often reminded her children that "the nurses ran that hospital!". It was there that she met her dearest friend, nursing school little sister, and future godmother to her children, Hope Wolford Butler. Over the years Nancy worked labor & delivery (and "practically delivered Morry Butler"), med-surg, behavioral health and geriatrics at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Chippenham Hospital, Retreat Hospital, and University Park Nursing Home. She was a nurse's nurse to the core!
As a single mom Nancy battled alcoholism but achieved sobriety and found community at AA and Rebos. In the last years of her nursing career she became a personal nurse and companion to several families. In particular, the friendship, love, and grace she found with Margaret Christian and her family (Dixon & Kate Roy, Peggy & Steve Riethmiller) was one of the most cherished relationships of her life. She was (and we are) forever grateful.
Ten years ago Nancy moved to New Mexico to be closer to family. She will be remembered for her unwavering work ethic, sharp wit, salty humor, and dislike of vegetables and she leaves us with a lasting image of her sitting on the patio smoking cigarettes and snacking on sweets while reading Danielle Steele. She is survived by daughters Catherine Hines and Elizabeth Paterson, son-in-law Andrew Paterson, grandsons Cole and Levi.
She is predeceased by her parents and sister Jane Totty Collier. Cremation has taken place with plans to scatter her ashes at Harbour Island; no service is planned. In lieu of contributions, mom preferred to encourage sobriety for whomever might need it.
It is with deep gratitude that we thank the hospice team and support staff who cared for Nancy in her final months including: Erika Torch, RN, Rene Rodriguez, CNA, Natalie Chavez, MSW, Jeremy Schulz, MDiv., Dottie Moss, MDiv., April Goldtooth, CNA, Lisa Green, RN, Beverly Jackson, RN, Carol Detwiler, RN, Joanna Brightwater, CNP, Dr. Rachel Rankin.
