Thomas Clements Obituary

Thomas Frederick Clements

Thomas Frederick Clements, 69, entered the presence of our Lord on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at his home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Tom was born on May 3, 1953, in the U.S. Naval Hospital Oakland, California, to Albert John Clements, Sr. and Mary Jane Leonardi Clements. He grew up in Wickliffe, Ohio, graduating from Wickliffe High School in 1971. Tom worked at several jobs in Ohio and played in bands as a drummer before leaving for the Los Angeles area where he played drums professionally. He loved the outdoors and went camping and four-wheeling in his beloved Ford Bronco, and scuba diving in Mexico and Florida. In between playing in bands, Tom worked as a commercial roofer, eventually moving to northern California where he met and married JoAnn McAvoy on June 13, 1993, in Nevada City, California. The couple moved that year to Colorado where Tom established a handyman business and began to build drum kits with a unique octagonal construction. He and JoAnn joined the worship team at church and praised God together.

In Colorado, Tom was a member of the Common Ground Blues Band as well as the Good News Blues Band and played gigs around the area. His handyman business also flourished, with many loyal customers, some of whom became good friends.

In 2013, Tom and JoAnn moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and Tom again played drums at church but retired his handyman business. In the next few years, his creative spirit was expressed in making more drums and wood wall hangings with southwest themes. Tom loved the beauty of New Mexico, especially the clarity of the blue skies and the amazing cloud formations.

Tom is survived by his wife, JoAnn; stepson, Thomas Deane Weber; sister, Cathy (Bruce, deceased) Hirko; brother, Albert Clements, Jr.; nieces, Jennifer (Jason) Weekley, Amy (Danijel) Cindric, and Katie Hirko; great nieces and nephews, Ayla Weekley, Carmen Mastropietro, Niko and Nina Cindric. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert John Clements, Sr. and Mary Jane Leonardi Clements; and brother, Paul.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 22nd, at 2:00 p.m. at AnchorPoint Church, 6751 Pasilla Road, Rio Rancho, NM 87144. The service will be Livestreamed through the church website,

I have so many memories of Tom. Our camping trips. He loved to fish would show my daughter how to fish and hike. He would play his drums at our house when he lived with us. Get us dancing. Always had a good time with him

The memories of my youth are flooded with the thoughts of my eldest cousin Tom and his band. Band practices in my Uncle Al and Aunt Mary´s basement. Watching the band perform live at Wickliffe High School. All mezzmorizing stuff for a 6th grader. After Tom left N.E. Ohio he would occasionally make his way back for family visits and we reunite as adults at his old homestead. It is then that I began to understand his his good natured character and self-deprecating humor. Rest In Peace cousin and I hope that you find your best childhood friend, Dennis in the Lords Kingdom. My eternal love for you, Cousin Dan Dan.
