George Stelioes Obituary

George F. Stelioes, 94, died on Dec. 27, 2017, at the Mexico, Mo., Veterans Home, where he spent the last month of his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Viola Patrawke Stelioes; his daughter and son-in-law, Anne Frances and Alexander; and his nephew, Erich Patrawke. He has four grandchildren: Leander, Linden, Lucy and Kyndle.
George was born to Frances and Spiros Stelioes on June 25, 1923, in Halfway, Mich. He grew up in rural Missouri. He joined the Army in 1942, and served three years in the South Pacific. After he was honorably discharged in 1945, at the end of World War II, he went on to achieve his Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University, then his Master of Arts from the University of Wyoming.
George retired from the Anchorage School District in 1978. While employed there, he influenced many young lives as a teacher, coach and mentor. One of his primary coaching contributions was in getting ice hockey accepted in the ASD as a major sport. During the summer months he pursued his varied interests, such as hunting, fishing and building custom homes with his wife, Viola, who was also a teacher.
After retirement, George and his wife and daughter moved to Louisiana, Mo., where they purchased a farm. Viola's nephew, Erich, became part of the family and part of the farm in 1980. George raised and showed Arabian horses, cows, crops and native grasses, and enjoyed passing his knowledge on to his children and grandchildren.
George was buried with military honors during a private service on Jan. 2, 2018, at Jordan-Buffalo Cemetery in Louisiana, Mo. Memorials may be sent in his honor to the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, Mo., c/o Collier Funeral Homes Inc., 117 Barnard Drive, Louisiana, MO 63353.

I worked with George as a counselor. He was one of the best human beings I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. I could only hope that some of his qualities rubbed off on me. If you went to lunch with George as a friend and or coworker he always insisted on picking up the tab. He considered it to be an insult if one refused his gift and generosity. The world was made a better place for many due to his presence.

A great teacher very dear to my heart. He cared about each and every one of u-class of 1964 West High. He encouraged us and gave us our wings to fly. One of the best of the best.

Hugs of comfort to Mrs. Stelioes and Anne Francis. Mr. and Mrs. Stelioes also taught for one year in Shageluk, Alaska in the early 1980s. He and his wife and daughter are fondly remembered. We loved it that he taught our kids wrestling and was such a good teacher in all areas.

While a PE class at West High might involve acknowledgement that varsity athletes were human but the rest of us were not, I was always relieved when Coach Stelioes was in charge, as he encouraged everyone to try their best and felt no need to belittle those of us who were not stars in any given activity or sport. He is one of four coaches I have encountered in my lifetime who were excellent in their skills and humane in their approach to students. Bless his memory!

George Stelioes was a positive influence in my life at Romig Junior High School, 1967-1969. I've often wondered what became of him. Now I know he's been busy doing just that all of these years since. RIP Coach.

Vi, condolences on your loss. George was a great impact on my life. A lot of us youngsters from the 60s can say that and mean it deeply and sincerely. The two of you were a great team and I thank you for your time, interest and concern.

Coach Stelioes was an important role model to so many. Teaching was different then, but having a male role model in a position of respect in the community never was out of style.
Thank you.

Mr. Stelioes was a dedicated teacher who treated us students with more patience than we probably deserved. I remember him from West High School with great fondness. My sympathy to his family.
