Henry Weil Obituary

Longtime Anchorage resident Henry T. "Hank" Weil died of heart failure Jan. 11, 2010, at the age of 65.

A viewing will be held from 10:30-11 a.m., with a service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 8110 Jewel Lake Road in Anchorage. A reception and lunch are planned after the service.

Henry was born May 4, 1944, in Elma, N.Y., to Chester and Leita Weil. He graduated from Syracuse University and served in the Marine Corps. He married Barbara Long in New York in 1967 and had his first son, Remy, in 1970.

In his adult career, he worked as a reservations manager for Northwest Airlines in New York City. He transferred to Anchorage in 1971 and had sons Charlie (1973) and Blake (1974). He ultimately retired in 1999 as district manager of Cargo Operations with NWA.

His leisure activities included woodworking, hunting, fishing, and cooking for his family and friends. His love for aviation, the Yukon River, the Iditarod and the Big Lake cabin reflected his love of Alaska. His friendships crossed all generations, taking joy in the uniqueness of each person. His kind and generous soul was contrasted by a unique sense of humor that left others repeating his "Hankisms" for years after.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara; sons, Charles and Blake; and sister, Leita May Reed.

He was preceded in death by his son, Remy, in 1991; and brother, Tom, in 2005.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, 4721 Aircraft Drive, Anchorage 99502 or Lumen Christi High School, 8110 Jewel Lake Road, Anchorage 99502.

Arrangements are with Legacy Funeral Homes, Kehl's Chapel; www.legacyalaska.com.

Barbara, Charlie, and Blake.
It was sad to hear about Hank. I will remember him lying on his side in the salon of the Who Cares with a smile on his face draining the water out of his ears after he had been trying to keep up with his sons on the jet ski. Of course Charlie felt bad so he got the turkey baster out from the galley to see if he could help.
My thoughts are with you.

Dear Barb, Charlie & Blake: I was so saddened to read about Hank's passing. I first met Hank in 1977 when I started working at NWA as the Secretary to the District Manager. Those were the days of Phil Gossard, Curt Jensen, Pat Kenna & Bill Hall. After moving over to KLM Airlines in 1979, I still enjoyed working with Hank on several reservation and cargo issues for many years during my KLM days. Hank was a great guy who will be missed by many. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Rest in Peace Hank!

I will always remember the years at Norhtwest, hunting trip to Cold Bay, and all of the fishing expeditions. But, most especially, (as you put it, Barb) Hank's "graphic" humor. I will not forget our talks about family and the joy he had with all of you.

January 14, 2010

My deepest condolences to Barb, Charlie, and Blake.
Hank was a great friend and neighbor for many years.
All of us have a favorite story about Hank - here is one of mine.
A bunch of us airline types were fishing on a trip to Grovenor in the
Katmai camps. Don Brugman, Norm Tibbets, and I were up stream from where Hank was. He was at a big bend of the river. We spied a huge brown bear walking across the grass flats heading right for the river bend and Hank.
I hollered "Hank watch out, there is a big bear walking right for you. He replied "I don't see it" He was standing right at the stream and there was about a five foot bank directly above him. We watched as the bear continued. It broke through the grass right above Hank - about 10 feet above and over him. He stood there looking at about a thousand
pounds of bear and yelled back to us " I see it now!"
Hank was one of a kind - We will all miss him greatly.

Hank was my welcoming committee to Alaska in 1979 and it was my good fortune to have worked alongside him for over five years. He is one of my unforgettable people. He was a gracious, caring person who lived where he wanted but did not forget his ties to other people. I just spoke to him last week and he was his normal, cheerful self. A good way to remember him.
All my best to Barb, Charlie and Blake. He was a wonderful man who will be missed by all who knew him.
