Robert Larkey Obituary

Robert Lee Larkey Sr, 77 of Anchorage, Alaska passed away July 7th, 2014 at his home surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grand children. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 12th at 11:00am at the Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel and Crematory at 440 East Klatt Road. Robert was born in Wellsburg, WV on July 24th, 1936 to Walter Blair and Josa Goddard Larkey, he was one of 10 children. At a young age he joined the Army along with his younger brother Raymond. He was honorably discharged from the Army on April 3rd, 1958. While riding a bus he saw a young Margaret Hickman, and he asked her if she was Muriel's sister and she said yes, he told her that he was going to marry her one day. So on April 5, 1959 he married the love of his life, Margaret Hickman. They were married for 55 years. In May of 1963 Robert & Margaret along with their 3 young daughters drove the Alaska Highway to settle in Anchorage. They went on to have 3 more children. The family settled in the Spenard area until 1987 then they moved to Bayshore, where they still live today. Bob worked for the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron on Elmendorf Air Force Base. He also was a mason by trade. Some of the buildings he helped build are still around Anchorage today. He loved to fish and hunt, making many trips to Afognat Island to hunt deer, and to fish the Kenai River. His goal was to build his family a cabin which he achieved with the help from his children, he loved to spend the summers there. He enjoyed giving nick names to his grandchildren, he would tell them about the pets he had growing up in the hills of West Virginia. He had a flying squirrel, a skunk, and a whole lot more. He loved to sit around and tell lots of stories. Our family has lost a very wonderful man, he was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather , his passing has left our family with a huge hole in it, he will never be forgotten and missed dearly by all that knew him. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Walter Blair and Josa Goddard Larkey. His brothers Victor, Louis, Raymond, Lonnie and Leroy, as well as his in-laws Alex and Alice Jackson Hickman. Also his beloved companion dog Tidewater Lee, who never left his side. Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years Margaret. His daughter's Peggy Larkey, Kim Larkey-Sylvester (Jeff) , Vicki Larkey, son Rob Larkey (Tonya) , James Larkey all of Anchorage, Ak. and daughter Dawn Larkey-Stephens of Wichita Falls, Texas. He is also survived by his grand children in order: Justin Scott, Machell Larkey, Alan Larkey, Mark Stephens Jr, Benjamin Sylvester, Marissa Stephens-Ebbers (Michael), Robi Larkey, Tyler Sylvester, Travis Sylvester, Robert Larkey III, and Olivia Larkey. He is also survived by his great-great grandchildren, Brayden Scott, Mason Stephens, Odin Scott, and 2 unborn grandsons, Zander Larkey and Conrad Ebbers. Robert is also survived by his sisters, Bonnie Lowry of WintersVille, Ohio, Shirley Reitter (William) Of Follansbee, WV, Rose Monseau, of Weirton, WV and Lola Strope of Weirton, WV. Everyday I miss you. And although the sadness from it has passed and the amazing memeories have begin to bring me joy, I still cry. Ive been down to Kenai a lot since youve been gone, just to be lost in those moments weve always had fishing together with the family. I remember catching silvers with you in the slew one year because they were in so thick. And I always remember every fish we caught we always wanted you to be the first to see. Although you were a man of few words, I learned a lot from you, as did a lot of people. Youve touched many lives grandpa, and I only hope in my lifetime I can do the same. I will love you always, and visit you often. Ill see you again one day.

Love, Robison

Though I've only had the privilege of meeting him once, I felt like I knew a lot about him from the way everyone spoke about him. In poor physical health, he still made it to his granddaughter's wedding. That says a lot about his character and love for his family. He was an inspirational, dedicated, and honorable man. He will be deeply missed.
My prayers are with his family at this time.

So go and fun free with the angles
Dance around the golden clouds
For the lord has chosen you to be with him
And we should feel nothing but proud
Although he has taken you from us
And our pain a lifetime will last
Your memory will never escape us
But make us glad for the time we did have
Your face will always be hidden
Deep inside our hearts
Each precious moment you gave us
Shall never, ever depart
So go and run free with the angels
As they sing so tenderly
And please be sure to tell them
To take good care of you from us
your loving family
