MIKE THOMAS 12/19/1947 - 05/18/2025 ALEXANDRIA, IN - In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 18, 2025, Robert Michael "Mike" Thomas at age 77 was released from the limitations and challenges of his earthly body. His last earthly breath instantly became pure and heavenly air. Mike was born on December 19, 1947, in Anderson to Floyd and Ruth (Ellis) Thomas and was a lifetime Alexandria resident. He was a graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School-Class of 1965. Mike heard the call to serve his country and did so in the United States Army, proudly serving with the 592nd Transportation Company during the Viet Nam war. He was honorably discharged as a SP 5 in 1969. Mike retired from the City of Alexandria in 2009 after 25 years serving his community. Many of those years he spent as Park Superintendent where he invested himself in the care, maintenance and beautification of Beulah Park. Mike was active in the Alexandria community in so many ways. He was a member of the Alexandria American Legion, the Alexandria Eagles Lodge #1771, the Alexandra-Monroe Historical Society, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, the former Alexandria Lions Club, the Alexandria Main Street and the Community Church of Frankton. Mike was a great supporter of Homers Helpers, the Alexandria animal rescue organization. Mike was a skilled and gifted woodworker. The City of Alexandria and dozens of folks have been blessed with handmade or refurbished wood projects that Mike's skilled hands have touched. He enjoyed auctions, flea markets, Louisiana State University athletics and was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs. The words "thank you" seem so inadequate to express the love and appreciation from our grateful hearts. Survivors: Wife-Connie (Hobbs) Thomas-married February 17, 1968 Daughter-Traci (Dennis) Lane of Alexandria Son-Scott Thomas of Alexandria Granddaughter-Elizabeth Lane (Markus Miller) of Alexandria Goddaughter-Bethany (Andy) Sovern of Alexandria Several sisters and brothers-in-laws Several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, his best friend-Eddie Sizelove who was killed in action in Viet Nam on June 2, 1968, a nephew-Dion Thomas in 1987, his brother-Tommy "Butch" Thomas in 2021, his daughter-in-law-Angela Thomas in 2023 Services honoring Mike's life, legacy and faith were held at 7 PM on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in the Owens Funeral Home, 412 North Harrison Street, Alexandria with Pastor Bob Preusz and friends officiating. Military honors were accorded by the United States Army and the Elwood VFW Honors team followinig the service. Cremation will take place. The Thomas family received friends at the Owens Funeral Home after 3 pm Thursday prior to the service. Private interment will take place in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria at the convenience of the family.
