Deacon Philip J. Mylod U.S.M.C. Ret., affectionately known as "The Major" died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family. He served 29 years as a permanent diaconate at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Normandy Beach, as well as Jersey Shore Medical Center and St. Elizabeths' Church in Avon. He became a member of St. Peters' Parish upon moving to Point Pleasant Beach and ministered to the residents of the Valentine House, a home for the mentally disabled. He graduated Holy Cross College, Worcester, MA. He was Awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for serving gallantly in the Sixth Marine Division in Okinowa during WWII. He Served in the State Attorney General's office and the Passaic County Prosecutors office where he was acting Prosecutor. He then went into private law practice with his father, Honorable Judge James P. Mylod, who started the firm in 1904. He was rated as a "Preeminent Lawyer" among his peers, and was highly respected by his colleagues and clients. Up until his final days, he remained sharp and actively served "Of Counsel" to the third generation legal practice continued on by his son, Philip G. Mylod. He loved the ocean, surfing and sailing. The "Major" was known to take on heavy waves during Nor'easters with his Newport Wedge Vector, surfing well into his 80's.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 30 years, Anne Marie Mylod, and his son, James P. Mylod. He is survived by his six beloved children, Michelle Marvel and husband Donald Marvel of Basking Ridge, Marian Audino of Grand Junction, Colorado, Mark Mylod of Clinton, Michael G. Mylod of Freehold, Philip G. Mylod and wife Jennifer Mylod of Toms River, and Anne Marie Mylod of Howell. "Pappy" leaves 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was remarried, and is survived by his second wife, Marie Moore Mylod. They shared 30 years of a deep, abiding faith which included many holy pilgrimages.

During these years, he was always kind & loving towards Marie's three children, Jean Marie Scott and husband Steve Scott of Point Pleasant, Richard Moore & wife Beth Ann Moore of Point Pleasant, and Steven Moore & Pam Moore of Point Pleasant; and he loved his five step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Viewing hours will be held at 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, at St. Peter's R.C. Church, Foreman Ave. in Point Pleasant Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 in the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the Assoc. of Marian Helpers in Devine Mercy, Stockbridge, MA 01263. Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements.
