Susan Penrod Villapiano, 55, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 22, 2016 long and courageous battle with breast cancer. By her side were her best friend and husband, Phil, the love of her life, her son Michael, and Susan's sister Mary and brother, Bob.

Susan was born in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. She attended York Community High School in Elmhurst, IL and graduated in 1979. After high school, she attended The University of Illinois where she earned her BS in marketing and the University of Chicago where she earned her MBA in Finance. Soon after college, Susan moved to NYC where she was a former corporate finance professional and CFO of a Fortune 500 company. After meeting and marrying Phil, she moved to NJ. She resided in Ocean Township before moving to Rumson.

Susan was very active in every aspect of Michael's life as well as the community in which she lived. She was a community volunteer at Holy Cross Church. She served on The Advisory Board for the NJ Commission on Cancer Research, the Board for the Mercy Center of Asbury Park with its Sisters Academy of NJ, the Foundation to Save the Jersey Shore after Hurricane Sandy and the Rumson Education Foundation. In addition, Susan created the Rumson PTO Curriculum Enhancement Liaison Program for Rumson Elementary schools just to name a few. Susan was honored last spring at the Beauty Ball 2016 sponsored by the Beauty Foundation for Cancer Care. That evening, she received the Peter Criss Courage Award. In addition to all this, she chased two beagles, Yankee and Nestle, around the streets of Rumson for a decade.

Susan was predeceased by her grandparents, Robert A. and Lillian Reidel and Margaret L. Wnn and Charles E. Penrod, also her in-laws, Dorothy and Augustus Villapiano. Susan is survived by her husband, Phil, son Michael, step-daughter, Andrea (Jim), step-son, Philip (Laura), her parents, Bob and Judy Penrod of Verona, Wisconsin, sister, Mary Penrod (Rob Ruggiero) of Paoli, PA, brother Bob Penrod (Kristen) of Plano, Texas, aunt, Barbara Sowers (Stan) of Houston, Texas, brothers-in-law, Gus Villapiano (Lauren) of Oakhurst, John Villapiano (Sharon) of Long Branch, sister-in-law, Carolee Villapiano of Oakhurst and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Avenue, Asbury Park on Sunday, November 27 from 2 pm - 6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 am in Holy Cross Church, Rumson. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations made to The Mercy Center-Sisters Academy, 1106 Main Street, Asbury Park, NJ 07712 would be appreciated. Dear Phil, Michael and family ~ So sorry to hear the news of your devastating loss. I lived in Rumson, and since my move I've been out of touch, only recently hearing of Susan's passing. Michael you may remember me and my daughter Emma. You used to babysit her and actually taught her to ride a two wheeler. Once you got locked out of my house on Heathcliff Road with Emma and you and the other teenage boys in the neighborhood were on the roof looking for an open window. I must say you were as cool as a cucumber when I got home, never letting on what happened. It was your mom who blew your cover the next day and told me what transpired. I have many fond memories of my times with Susan. Wicked smart, opinions that matter. We read a book a month together for many years in book group and enjoyed talking literature. She came to our apartment in NYC on numerous occasions and we had lively discussions regarding current events, local, national and political and of course our beloved children. Susan, It has been almost one year since you passed on. During this time, I have missed you very much. But I know that you are still here when I think of all the things you taught me whether you knew you were influencing me or not - encouraging my individuality and goofy sense of humor, classic music including a deep appreciation of Bruce, to believe in myself and an intense loyalty to friends and family but also brutal honesty when needed.
I can't thank you and Phil enough for allowing me to share Michael's childhood. I loved watching you teach him to sing, dance, read, laugh, build Playmobil and just letting him be a kid. He is still the same sweet, caring son you raised and will always make you proud and I will always see your character when I look at him.
Eva and Lillian miss you terribly. You are a perfect role model for them. Teaching them that they can be strong, intelligent, independent women and they can decide their own path through life. Thank you. Your example has made my job as a father much easier.
I have thought many times on how to talk to you again not knowing the best way. I believe the Guest Book only lasts for one year so that time is rapidly approaching and it was now or never.
Susan, you are not gone. You are with still with me as strongly as you have ever been. Thank you for being my sister and friend.

You know someone touched your life when you have not seen them for over 30 years and when you hear of their passing it just breaks your heart. I was friends with "Penrod" as we called her, in high school and thru the college years, we never used our real names. She was a wonderful and caring person and from what I have read she had not changed in the years since we last saw each other. I still have a picture she gave me of her from our yearbook at York and with the exception of her hairstyle, she looks exactly the same as the one on this page. Every time I see the movie Grease I think of her as we went to see it in high school at the theater. Did not want to see it but was easily talked into going by Sue. To Phil and your family and to the Penrod family my thoughts and prayers are with you. You have a shining star looking down on you and many happy memories to keep close to your heart. Sue is still with us in our hearts and memories. "Lubes" just wishes he could have seen her one more time.

After that, we would run into each other and exchange greetings in the school halls or at weekend parties. Sue was beyond smart, she was quietly wise and cool in the way that I and others admired. Her many professional and personal accomplishments come as no surprise to those of us who remember the soft voiced but witty and fun Sue Penrod. Over the years I would occasionally hear of the ups and downs of her life from Cindy Raymond who was a dear friend of hers since their days together at U of I. Cindy & I have been friends since the late 80's. She told me how great it was to see Sue when she came back to Illinois this past summer. The last time I saw her was at our 20th High School Reunion looking as pretty and together as ever. We shared some laughs and hugs and I'm left here remembering that time and all the fun we had back in that History class. Again, I wish all who knew Sue the best during this terribly sad time. And I feel bad for those who never got to know her, she was one of a kind!

Until I met Susan, I thought you were the most courageous person I know. You and Michael are in our prayers.
