Kathleen Steinmetz Obituary

Kathleen (Quinn) Steinmetz

Kay Steinmetz, 88, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in Denver, Colorado after a short illness. Kay was born in Sioux Falls, SD on May 9, 1926 to Ray and Gladys (Milligan) Quinn. She attended Washington High School and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1948, where she was elected "Miss Popularity" In 1947 and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She married Charles (Chuck) Steinmetz on December 28, 1952. They lived in Watertown, SD, until 1964 when she and her children moved to Sioux Falls. She started her career with Job Service (then known as S.D. employment Security) in 1962. She was a dedicated professional and gave a lot of her time to strengthen the local chapter of IAPES in S. Dak. She retired in 1982 and moved to the Denver area in order to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Her roots in Sioux Falls proved to be very deep as she returned to live there, to the delight of her friends, in 1991. Due to health issues, Kay moved back to Denver in 2012.

Kay loved her family, especially the reunions and gatherings that involved her sisters and their families, her children and their families and all of her cousins. She celebrated 60 years of sisterhood in P.EO. Chapter AI in 2012. As a longtime lover of books and reading, she was also active in a local book club.

Kay is survived by her children, Laurie (Dan) Bruner of Amelia Island, FL; Jennifer (Ken) Royce of Centennial, CO; Andrew (MinSoo) Steinmetz of Littleton, CO. Sister Pat Fletcher of Trinidad, CO, Brother in law, Dean Bailey of Lighthouse Point, FL; grandchildren Matthew Tracy, Katie James, Lindsay Steinmetz and AJ Steinmetz, in addition to 5 great-grandchildren, her nieces, nephews and cousins, and many dear and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Carol Bailey. The family would especially like to thank the staff at the Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls and Hallmark Nursing Center in Denver for the care and support she received in recent years.

Memorial services in Denver and Sioux Falls will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of South Dakota at 1000 N. West Ave. Suite 250, Sioux Falls, SD, 57104.

Dear Andrew and family,
My sincere condolences to all of you; I'm sorry to learn your mother has passed away. I remember her from our childhood years growing up together in the same neighborhood in Sioux Falls. Her life was one well lived! I hope her legacy of service and fellowship is of some comfort to you at this sad time.

Kay was one of my Pi Phi sisters and bridesmaids. We were great friends and I have many fond memories with Kay. Kay was instrumental in introducing me to Frank, my husband of 65 years. May God bless Kay and her family.

My sincere sympathy to Kay's family, she was one of the best, & was a mentor to me. I worked at Job Service from 1972 to 1986 and Kay was always their to guide me on my career path & I will always be grateful to her. She & I worked together to promote IAPES on the state level, & because of her I was elected state president of IAPES in 1981. Her words of wisdom & encouragement will always be my memory of her. God bless you all
