Douglas C. Riddell

NEW SALEM, MA — Douglas C. Riddell, 72, of Ellis Drive, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, October 20, 2022 after being stricken ill.

Born in Montague on February 7, 1950, he was the son of Wilfred and Doris (Turner) Riddell. He graduated from Ralph C. Mahar Regional with the class of 1968.

Douglas married Johanna (Marso) on February 8, 1978 and they have enjoyed over 44 years of marriage.

On July 2, 1968, Douglas enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged on June 9, 1972. Douglas later enlisted in the United States Army on December 14, 1977 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on December 8, 1980.

Douglas was employed by the L. S. Starrett Co. in Athol as a metal finisher and retired 2005.

Douglas enjoyed cruises, camping, but most of all his home where he could take care of his yard and do gardening. He was a loving and supporting uncle, especially to Ali and Joey. Douglas also had a soft spot for his cat "Molly" whom he loved immensely.

Douglas is survived by his loving wife, Johanna Riddell of New Salem; brothers, Chris Riddell and his wife, Cathy, of Punta Gorda, Florida, Michael Riddell and his wife, Elsie, of The Villages, Florida, and Shawn Riddell and his wife, Gail, of Hope Sound, Florida; and sister in law, Martha Riddell of Auburn. He also leaves his nephews and nieces, Joey Riddell, Paula (Riddell) Lovoine, Tina Riddell, Morgan Riddell, Colleen Riddell, Heather (Riddell) Jacobs, Alicia Riddell (who was like a daughter), Harry Moraga, Brian Riddell, Jessica (Riddell) Carcieri, Bruce Riddell Jr., Al Riddell, Shane Riddell, Casey (Riddell) Chadwick, Craig Riddell who was also Douglas' Godson, and Sarah (Riddell) Stratton. He also leaves two nephews of Germany, Jenz Marso and Dominic Marso.

Douglas was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Bruce, Jeff and Mark.

There are no calling hours and interment in South Cemetery, Orange, will be private.

A celebration of life will be celebrated on November 14, 2022 at the Orange American Legion, 40 Daniel Shays Highway, Orange, from 12- 4 p.m. All friends and family are welcome to celebrate Douglas' life.
