Family-Placed Death Notice

BROOKS, Arlene Louise Naples, Florida Arlene Louise Brooks, 91, of Naples, FL and formerly of Atlanta, GA died December 23, 2013 at the Avow Hospice in Naples, FL after a short illness. Arlene Brooks was born March 7, 1922 in Newport, RI and was the daughter of George Denwood Havican and Elsie Nelson Havican of Newport. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Everett Beverly Brooks who died in Naples, FL, January 14, 2004. She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Brooks Fambrough of Marietta, GA; two sons, E Bruce Brooks of Peachtree City, GA and Raymond D. Brooks of Alpharetta, GA. Additionally, she had three grandsons; William M Fambrough, III of Woodstock, GA, Taylor C. Brooks, of Austin, TX and John Thomas Alden Brooks of Columbus, GA and one great grandson, Wyatt Everett Brooks of Austin, TX. Arlene Brooks was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Naples, FL and a prior member of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church of Atlanta, GA where she was a resident for 57 years before she and her husband moved to Naples, FL. She was a member of The Daughters of The King at her churches both in Naples and Atlanta. A resident of Bentley Village in Naples, Arlene was instrumental in the formation of Sweaters For Orphans chapter where hundreds of sweaters were knitted by the residents and then shipped to orphans in Russia and other East European countries. At the outbreak of World War II, Arlene Brooks was a civilian employee of the Navy Department and worked at the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, Rhode Island conducting quality control and testing of torpedoes. She resigned from that position when she moved to Atlanta, GA upon her marriage in 1942. She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband of 61 years, a loving mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. Arlene was a gifted artist, an avid golfer and active participant in community and residential activities at Bentley Village and friend to all that knew her. A memorial service will be held in Atlanta at St. Martin's in The Fields Episcopal Church in January, 2014. In lieu of Flowers and in honor of Arlene the family suggests donations to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 43105 or the charity of choice.
