I was so sad to read the news about Dr. Gallop passing. I was stationed with him at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in the OB/GYN clinic and I helped him with tumor board And colposcopy clinic 1982-83. I loved working with him, his laughter, his saunter, his whole light about him was just awesome!! I was so happy to reconnect with him I believe it was 2007. We were able to talk on the phone for a few minutes and he still called me Teresita !! I know it has been many years later but I just wanted y'all to know my thoughts and prayers are there for your family and let you know I thought your dad and your husband your family member was a wonderful man!!!!

Ginny and I were saddened to learn of Don's death. He was by far my favorite attending during my OB-Gyn training at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in the 1970s, and we have often thought of him over the years. In fact we were reminiscing about him just today and decided to look him up on the internet, which was how we got this sad news several months after the fact. Our condolences to his family.

My condolences to Dr. Don Gallup’s family regarding the loss of their loved one—a man that I greatly admired and never forgot about over the last 45 years. I discovered that Don had passed away while reading the “In Memoriam” section of the Military Officer Magazine of April 2011. I knew Don when he was a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps and the Navy Flight Surgeon for Patrol Squadron Eight at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. In 1966, when the squadron deployed to Naval Station Sangley Point in the Philippines, Don made the six-month deployment with us. Don not only took excellent care of the squadron personnel’s medical problems, but he also volunteered his time providing medical services to the villages outside the Sangley Naval Station. Don and I went on to different duty stations in our Navy careers and I lost contact with him. It is with great sadness for me to know of the passing of this great man. I have scanned two photos of Dr. Don from the squadron’s 1966 Western Pacific Cruise Book which I will forward to the family (one photo is attached).

Don was my Attending when I was a resident at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was wonderful. I now teach residents and not uncommonly quote him or mention him when teaching surgical technique. He is a significant part of my past. I will always be grateful for his teaching and humor. I know he is missed by all who knew him.

Mrs. Gallup and Family,
So sorry to hear of your loss. He will be missed. He was my Doctor and a precious friend. I prayers and thoughts are with you all.

February 5, 2011

Don was my Gyn Oncology Chairman while I was a resident at the Medical College of Georgia 1990-1994. But he was always more than a professor, he was a friend. He took a personal interest in all of his residents. The valuable years of training under Don continue to aide my performance in surgery today. Quotes such as "tie down to, don't pull up", echo in my mind as I operate. He not only taught me to operate, he taught me to be a sympathetic, caring physician. Don became a friend to me after completing my residency--and he always had an affectionate name for me--Sherry Berry. My love and prayers to his wife, Pam and children during this time of loss. Typically, residents in training are cautious in dealing with their attending doctors, especially at the beginning.
Don, however, could not prevent his mischievous attitude from shining through.
We were in our first year and a new staff man had arrived. I was in the Operating Room when Don entered to assist the newly arrived staff man. Don's opening question was, "How do you want me to cut your knots - too long or too short."
Don was brilliant, conscientious, tireless, and always an uplifting personality.
He will be missed.

Pam, we still have fond memories of DON from our time at the Medical College of Georgia. We will always remember his annual 4th of July backyard parties and one fabuluous Christmas Party where the "magic brew" took a few prisoners. Don's laughter and confidence will always be a part of our memories. Although he was one of the best oncologists I have had the pleasure to work with, Don the personality made him stand out as truly special. He will be forever remembered most fondly. May God Bless you and your family at this difficult time.

We have many wonderful memories of Don when we were neighbors in Brittany Woods(Chesapeake, VA). Bill and Don spent most Saturdays at their repsective BBQs with a drink in one hand and, depending on the weather, often an umbrella in the other. Some of these evenings even evolved into a spontaneous party! Gail has a vivid memory of Don telling "camel" and "Miss Piggy" jokes as Dr. Ralph Chesson performed a c-section delivering our last child, Allen. He was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed. Our sympathy to Pam and the twins, Jonathan and Savanna, and also to Daverin and Kelly.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the outpouring of sympathy and love for my dad. We are all deeply saddened by his loss. I am still in shock. He was truly an outstanding Pyhysician, more than I can say. But, most of all he was the Best Father in the World!!! Kelly and I had many great years growing up with him. He also has 13 year old twins, Savanna, and Jonathan. I am so sad that they did not have the time with him that Kelly and I did. Thank you for all of the kind and loving words. I LOVE YOU DAD!!! And I can still hear your infamous laugh...

Sincerely, Daverin Gallup Slantis

Dear Pam:
I can't express how sad I am with the loss of Don. He is the reason I am where I am and what I do. Everytime I am in the OR I do things he taught me. He was simply the best mentor I have ever had and he lives on in those I teach.
We are all better for his teaching and encouragement and wonderful spirit.

Dear Pam:
Don was our teacher, mentor and best friend while we were residents at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of something he said or use something he taught. He was simply the best--"soared with the eagles".

Dr. Gallup was a fantastic doctor, and with his gentle kindness and humour, he reminded me of my late grandfather, who was chief pharmacist at various Scottish hospitals. I owe Dr. Gallup my life, and his wonderful bedside manner made what was otherwise a pretty grim experience bearable. I will miss him greatly, and I can only offer my deepest sympathy to you, his family.

January 12, 2011

Dr. Gallup, I am sorry for your loss. I will be praying for you and the rest of the family. He was an incredible man, loved and respected by many. I know you and the kids brought much joy to him.

To all the Gallup Family...I was so sorry to hear of Dr Gallup's passing. I worked with both of you on Seven North at MCG... my maiden name was Sheila Scott... I always liked Dr. Gallup because, in addition to being an excellent physician, and caring of his patients, he was a real "salt-of-the-earth" kind of man...always had a smile on his face and treated the nursing staff with respect...Pam, I know you and the children will miss him, but you have 14 years of happy memories to look back on...When you're having a bad emotional day, I find that it helps to dwell on the many good and happy memories you made together..I'm sure they vastly outnumber any bad ones....May God be with you at this sad and difficult time. With sincere condolences,

Dr. P. Gallup, I was so sad to hear about the loss of your husband Dr. D. Gallup. I feel priviledged to have known him and to have seen the reflection of his teaching in the work of the residents who worked under him. I also count it a priviledge to have worked with both of you and to have you as my own physician. The loss of Dr. D. Gallup will of course be a great loss to the OB/GYN an oncology service but his children will know the legacy of his work in the patients he has cared for and those who benefit from the care of those he has taught in their residentcy. God bless you and your children and give you peace in this difficult time.

Today is indeed a sad day for us. Dr. Gallup was a wonderful mentor and role model. Words cannot express the sense of loss that is felt with his passing. Rest in peace, Dr. Gallup. You will be missed greatly.

To the Gallup Family, my prayer is that God grant you comfort and strength, now and in the days ahead.
I feel so blessed to have known Dr. Gallup. He was always complimentary and had a genuine smile. He helped me feel confident in my working in the office, and he was a great teacher. He would have us all laughing at times. He always spoke when he came into the office, and when he left. He had excellent people skills and made each patient feel important. He will be missed by all who knew him.

I've worked for Skippy for 5 years at Memorial and I have to say that he was my favorite boss ever. I just loved his sense of humor. What a wonderful man! I will miss him greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with Pam and the children during this difficult time.

I was truly saddened by this huge loss. I worked for Dr. Gallup for over 5 years and he was an awesome man. He gave me a nickname (Sweetness), because I was so sweet (smile). Pam, Jonathan and Savanna, may the Lord give u peace that surpasses all understanding. My prayers are with you and your family.

I am terribly saddened by the news of Dr. Gallup's death. He has taken care of me for over 20 years & we had such a good understanding of each other. I always felt that he was on the cutting edge of the ovarian cancer field & that he gave me his best in terms of knowledge & experience.
I will truly miss him as a doctor & as a friend.
