Emerson WRIGHT Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

WRIGHT, Emerson EMERSON ELIZABETH PURCELL WRIGHT 1913 -2013 Emerson Elizabeth Purcell Wright, age 100,of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on December 29, 2013. Emerson was born in old Milton County, Georgia, March 22, 1913. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, William Louis Purcell and Laura Maddox Purcell; her husband. John Gabriel Wright; and two sons, John Emerson Wright and Harold Eugene Wright. She is survived by her daughter in-law, Beverly Ozburn Wright, of Atlanta; two grandsons, Wesley Emerson Wright. of Atlanta. and Eugene Nunnally Wright, and wife Allison Lucas Wright; and two great-grandsons. Scholl Emerson Wright and Lucas Nunnally Wright, of Athens, Georgia. Throughout her lifetime, Emerson was lovingly known to family by her nickname. "Butch." She had a deep love for her family and found great joy in each of their accomplishments. She is remembered for her love of flowers, which she grew profusely and could name them all. Emerson's father was a home builder and they lived throughout the area of Fulton County that is now northwest Atlanta - the Howell Mill and Home Park communities. Emerson attended the old E.P. Howell Elementary School. She graduated from Fulton High School. Emerson and her husband were active members of North Atlanta Baptist Church, in Home Park, where they reared their family. Their son, John, met his future wife. Beverly, at this church (the building of which is now part of the Georgia Tech campus). Emerson was an active member of Northside Park Baptist Church in Atlanta, where she taught an adult Sunday school class. She was known for her deep faith, fervent prayer life, and extensive bible knowledge. Her love for Jesus, kind spirit, and encouraging words were an inspiration to all who met her. Emerson was civic minded and loved her country. She was active in the Sandy Springs Dorothy Benson Senior Center. Over the years, she was president of the PTA at Home Park Elementary School and O'Keefe High School, Wood bine Garden Club, and Women's Missionary Union. For many years she was the poll captain for her voting precinct and operated it flawlessly. She was a woman of patriotic fervor. She was a member of the James Gilliam Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. As you would expect, her family heritage was as special as she was, including, James "The Regulator" Emerson, a North Carolina Revolutionary War patriot. Emerson always stood for what was right. Her presence in any room brought a spirit of calm, quietness, smiles, and love. She will be missed by all who were privileged to know her and call her friend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Northside Park Baptist Church, 1877 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30318. A service in memory and honor of Emerson Wright and her life well-lived will be held at Northside Park Baptist Church on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. There will be a private burial at Atlanta's Westview Cemetery. Aunt Emerson was one of my favorite people. A more patient and loving soul I've never met. We did not learn of her passing until our Christmas card was returned. A hard way to learn that one we love so much has passed.

Dear Wright family,
Emerson was and will forever be my hero. She was an incredible lady. She was strong in her faith and was a loving, compassionate, loyal friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She will be missed here on earth, but is now with her Lord for all eternity.
