Howard Smith Obituary

Howard, the eldest of 12 children, was born at Blackhollow farm between Fort Collins and Ault to Stanley and Alphronia Smith. He attended Pierce School for 12 years and graduated in 1939. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Lowry Air Force base and then the South Pacific region, "flying the hump" between India and China during World War II. After returning from service, he attended Denver University and received his master's degree in electrical engineering. He built a home for himself and his family in Littleton and worked for Colorado Central Power and then for Public Service Company of Colorado until he retired in the 1970s. After retirement he taught electrical engineering at Metro State College until well into the 1990s. He and his wife Gretta moved to the Village at Skyline community in Colorado Springs in 2003. He was a member of South Broadway Christian Church for nearly 50 years and later a member of Village Christian Church. Howard is survived by three sons, Leroy "Roy" Smith of Colorado Springs, Dwight Smith of Houston, and Stanley Smith of Laramie, Wyoming; and by 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Everette of Woodland Park and Mathew of Greeley, and five sisters, Elizabeth Rex, Sybel Jacobsen and Carole Parsons, all of Loveland, Jeanette Hutchinson of Boca Raton, Florida, and Amy Phelps of Carson City, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his wife Gretta, a son Clyde, his parents, and four brothers, Wayne, Charles, Rupert and Verne Smith. A memorial service will be held in July. In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity International, 121 Habitat Street, Americus, GA 31709-3498 are appreciated.
