Jerry Fields Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

FIELDS, Jerry Jerry H. (Mr. Smokey) Fields of Dunwoody, GA was born November 26, 1928 in New York City to the late Anna and Lawrence Fields and died October 25, 2010. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Janis Fields. He is survived by his devoted son, daughter-in-law and grandson, Eddie, Linda and Jordan Fields, sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Bob Silverman, granddaughter, Shayna Fields; 11 other grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends Sylvia "Sam" Toole and Richard (R.C.) Cain. Mr. Fields moved to Atlanta at the age of 14, graduated Boy's High and entered the Navy at age 17. After his discharge, he attended and graduated from the University of Georgia and went on to earn several law degrees from John Marshall Law School, all the while serving as owner and President of Fields Realty Company. Aside from his family, the love of Jerry's life was his "clowning" with the Yaarab Temple Shriners where he served for 55 years as "Mr. Smokey" the clown, bringing happiness, laughter and hope to children all over the southeast. He also served as President of SESCA, the South East Shrine Clown Association. The oldest clown in this region, Jerry was a leader, a friend and a mentor. All that knew him loved him as the warm, wonderful and caring person he always tried to be. Wherever he went, not a child passed him by without him going into his pockets and giving each and every one a picture of "Mr. Smokey" the clown. He brought a smile to every boy and girl he met. Jerry was also a founding member and past president of the Braves "400" Club. He has been a season ticket holder of the Braves since their move to Atlanta in 1966. He also held season tickets to Falcons, Flames and his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. He was overall Chairman for the Red Cross Blood Drive for 25 years, Post Commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post 112, Founder of the Jewish Community Center Cardiac Rehab Program, President of the Jewish National Fund, Regional Governor of the AEPi Fraternity and a member of the 100% Right Club, which gave him an honorary position in the 100% Wrong Club (the 100 Most Influential Black People in Atlanta). In addition to his other pursuits, Mr. Fields was also a volunteer for nearly three decades with both DeKalb and Fulton Counties' Sheriff Reserves where he was elevated to the rank of Assistant Chief. Mr. Fields is also survived by sons, Kenny (Channa), Ronnie and Andy Fields. Sign online guest book at www.edressler.com. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Janis L. And Jerry H. (Mr. Smokey) Fields Memorial Fund to be set up at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. In the hearts of those that loved him, because of his extensive contribution to the Shrine Clowns, no one will ever be able to fill his size "42" shoes. Graveside services will be held TODAY, Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 1 pm at Arlington Memorial Park with Rabbi Joshua Heller officiating. Arrangements by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta (770) 451-4999.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. We will surely miss him. His smile, laughter and cheerfulness was contagious. The clown side of him gave us our "hugs and treats". He is probably sitting right now in heaven on a star making someone laugh and sharing a story or two. That was our Jerry!! Dr. Jeff Clark, Cathy Edwards and Eva Rashad
