Jonathan Allmett Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

JONATHAN LEE ALLMETT Jonathan Lee Allmett, age 36, formerly of Atlanta, GA and most recently of Houston, TX passed away on Monday, August 20, 2007. Our most giving and loving husband, son, brother and friend slipped from our arms to enter eternal peace. Jonathan was born in Epsom Surrey, England on February 23, 1971. He moved with his family to Texas in 1978 and spent the remainder of his childhood in Houston. He attended the Houston School for the Performing & Visual Arts and graduated from Eisenhower High School and was a current student at The University of Houston. Jonathan joined the Marines and spent four years stationed in Okinawa, Japan and in the Philippines. Jonathan was a professional musician whose incredible voice and stage presence left his listeners spellbound. During his remarkable life, Jonathan wrote and recorded countless original songs both with his band, Garrison Field, and as a solo artist. CDs include "Open", "Dawn", "Nowhere is Too Far", and "Some Trees Grow Bananas". Jonathan touched thousands of lives through his music. He also recorded two Christmas CD compilations for charities. He was the musical director for Camp Twin Lakes special needs camps for the last 8 years. His work with the camp kids was the most significant of his life; every single one of their hearts touched his. Jonathan recently joined Bootleggers Music Venue in Minneapolis as a partner in charge of all booking and entertainment. He also recorded commercials for Earhole Agency, Leo Burnett Agency and Spank Agency in Chicago. He leaves behind his wife, Dr. Michelle Ludwig of Houston, whom he recently married on May 26, 2007, his parents John and Carol Allmett of Panama City Beach, FL, brothers Colin and Justin Allmett of Atlanta, his Nan Iris Poulter of Wiltshire, England, uncles Malcolm and Geoffrey Poulter, and many other relatives in the UK. Jonathan had the most vibrant personality and giving heart of any angel on earth. His generosity to all who had the pleasure of sharing his life will always be remembered. Without him, our hearts are broken and our tears run endless, but our memories and joys are immeasurable. If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever and now the pause in our hearts is from the echo of Jonathan. The services for Jonathan Lee Allmett will take place on Saturday, August 25, 2007: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Visitation at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA; 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Visitation at Grace United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA; 3:00 PM Memorial Service at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial at Decatur City Cemetery will follow the service. Family and friends will gather at Camp Sunshine House after the interment. The family knows that many of Jonathan's loved ones were the children from his camps. The gathering at Camp Sunshine House will be a time of celebration in honor of Jonathan's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Camp Sunshine, Camp Kudzu, or Twin Lakes Camp. For addresses and information, contact A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. In 2000, Jon joined our "MAC Daddy" charity golf tournament in Atlanta with his acoustic guitar and brought music to the awards party for the very first time. Although Jon followed his music to Chicago and Houston, the music at the MAC Daddy has carried on ever since.

As we celebrate our 11th annual MAC Daddy tournament on May 17, 2008 at Stone Mountain Golf Club, half of this year's proceeds will be donated to Camp Twin Lakes in memory of Jon. May the memories he made live on forever.

Please contact me if you would like to join us for this year's MAC Daddy. We would be honored to have Jon's friends and family there. For additional info, please visit kuyahooravalley.org.

I heard the news last night in the most bizarre way. I was shocked. I ran to the computer to see if it was the Jon I knew, hoping it wasn't. I met Jon the night he moved to Chicago, he dedicated "Yellow" by Coldplay to me as he played at the Wrightwood Tap. That's how we met. I'll never forget it. I just don't understand what happened, and like a lot of other people I am searching for answers. I send my deepest sympathy to his family and all the kids at Camp Sunshine and Kudzu.

My favorite part of Camp Sunshine was the time spent with Jon singing. He was amazing and touched so many lives. And he is still touching them through his music. He is still a big part of so many of my memories, even from camp years ago. He will not be forgotten!

To Jon's Family, you have my deepest sympathy. I met Jon through Camp Braveheart. I used to be the camp director there and Jon always showed up early and stayed late to help. I always saw him happy and full of life. You should be proud of the life he led. He made others so happy. It was impossible to be down around Jon. He was full of life and enjoyed every minute of it. He will greatly be missed.

Heartfelt wishes go out to the Allmett family in their time of need.

I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to work with Jon many times over the years when he performed in Buckhead.

I guess God needed someone to entertain those that are no longer with us.

As a former Marine I say to Jon: If the Army and the Navy ever look upon Heaven's scenes they will find the streets guarded by U.S. Marines.

Dear Allmett Family,
Our hearts were touched with great sadness when we heard of Jon's passing. My son, Eric, has been at Camp Kudzu for the past 3 years with Jon. He made such a difference in the lives of the kids he touched with his music. We will always cherish the "Some Trees Grow Bananas" CD which will keep Jon alive in our hearts. As Jon would sing, "Love is higher than the mountains..."

I'm Bobby, an old friend of Jonathan's. I had the pleasure of knowing Jonathan as well as Colin in the early to mid 80's as youths. I was very deeply saddened to hear of the news, and my utmost condolences goes out to the family. In light of what has happened, I sure would love to get my hands on some of those songs Jonathan had written to remember him by. I will surely miss my good friend.

Dear Allmett Family,
My daughter, Dorothy, has been a camper at Camp Kudzu for seven years. I cannot tell you in words the impact that Jon had on her through his work with her and the other Type 1 Diabetics at this camp. She and we were deeply saddened by Jon's untimely passing. We know that he is singing lullabies to the angels in heaven in their cabins each night. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. We were booked this Sunday and all Jon was worried about was flight delays from San Diego. He was to play for my daughter's birthday. I had not heard from him so I e-mailed him and didn't receive a reply then I checked his website. It's surreal. I can't imagine your pain. I met him at the Children's Museum of Houston earlier this year and was SO HUGELY impressed with his talent and his gift with children both big and little. I'm so sorry for your loss. I will pray for you all.

My boys have attended Camp Kudzu since they were old enough to attend. Joe and Jack (Ben only had the courage to make it one year) have talked about the singer from camp. There's rarely a mention of camp where Jon is not talked about. I know that he is a huge part of the memories that my children will have for the rest of their lives. He was a great role model of what being a true volunteer is all about. Always a smile and always about everyone else and how you can help them.

You will truly be missed.

To Jon's Family and Friends,
As a former Camp Sunshine volunteer, I remember well the impact Jon had on the kids and staff at camp. When Jon was there, there was always music, songs, and love around him. He brought joy and smiles where ever he went.He was well received when he reached heaven. There were many angels there who knew him and greeted him with open arms. "Love Is" now resounds through heaven.

August 24, 2007

Dear Michelle,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, both families and everyone Jon knew during this painful time. We feel the world needs more people like your Jon, yet many were blessed by his life. For each life he impacted, many more -more than you will ever know- were touched, like the ever-widening ripple caused by a pebble touching water.
The words of "Hymn of Promise" have been a comfort to us over the years. Maybe the hymn's message will comfort you, too.

God bless you always and comfort you each day.

In Christian love,
Rocky, Alanna and Kit Blair

Jon was a AMAZING spirit. I had the opportunity to work with him this past summer at Camp Sunshine and have not stopped listening to his C.D since. His music and the way people responded to it, is a outstanding treasure. My heart goes out to the many many people who will feel this lose.
