Mary DALTON Obituary

DALTON, Mary Helen Mary Helen Dalton died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on July 25, 2016. She was born Mary Helen Garrison to Eugenia (Weddington) and Brice Garrison in her paternal grandparent's home in York, SC on August 2, 1924. Mary Helen, an only child, had an adventuresome childhood with her parents who referred to her as "Pal". They traveled extensively including a rugged cross country road trip to Yellowstone National Park in 1928 and a Christmas trip to Cuba in 1930. They lived in Columbus, Ohio, while her father completed his law degree, and several other states before settling in Charlotte, NC in 1939. Mary Helen graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1942. She then enrolled in Converse College, graduating in 1945 after three years. In 1948 she married James G. Dalton, Sr, also from Charlotte. They were married in Meyers Park Presbyterian church in Charlotte. The newlyweds enjoyed a two-week honeymoon in Ponte Vedra, FL and Sea Island, GA before settling in Atlanta and raising their three children. Mary Helen was a devoted Alumna of Converse College and served in a leadership role for twelve years on the Board of Trustees. In 1996, Mary Helen received the Distinguished Alumna award. Mary Helen was also a board member of the Brevard Music Center and the Duke Cancer Institute Board of Advisors. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church since 1957. Mary Helen's life was also punctuated by her creative energy. She was a prolific artist. The scope of Mary Helen's creativity and talents were broad, ranging from creating decorative arts, to oil painting, to jewelry making. She was predeceased by her two beloved grandsons Dalton Marsh King and Brice Garrison King. She is survived by her husband James G. Dalton, Sr, her daughter Nancy Dalton Steele, married to James H. Steele, Jr, her granddaughter Jamie Dalton Steele; her daughter Mary Gossett Dalton King married to Marsh B. King, her grandson Blake P. King married to Annie Spires King and her great-grandchildren Stella and Parks King; her son Jim Dalton, married to Alcina de Defigueiredo Dalton, and her grandchildren Jimmy, Margarida and Cristina Dalton. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 2 pm on Friday August 5th, 2016 located at 3003 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, GA 30327. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Converse College (Converse College Office of Institutional Advancement, 580 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302-1931).
