Paul Lombardi Obituary

LOMBARDI, Paul F. Paul F Lombardi, 77, of Atlanta, Georgia died at home on Friday January 22, 2016 after an eleven month battle with brain cancer. His loving wife, Mary Lynn, was by his side. Paul was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on October 25, 1938. He spent his childhood years in Rome, Georgia and graduated cum laude from Darlington School. Starting at an early age, Paul excelled academically and displayed a passion for classical music. He attended The University of Notre Dame and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He also served as Treasurer of the Senior Class and was a member of the marching band for four years. He completed his Master of Business Administration with honors, Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi, from Indiana University. Paul also worked there as a college instructor during his Masters program. He served six years in the United States Army & Reserve. Paul always had admiration and gratitude for all those who served in our military. Paul's business career began at Arthur Andersen & Co. After ten years as a CPA and consultant, he chose to pursue a new direction in business. He was the Senior Vice President at Sands & Company, CEO of Resort Designs in Charleston, South Carolina, CEO of Norcom, and CEO of Premier Pharmacy. In 1995, he was the Chairman and Director of Office Images, where he dutifully worked until his cancer surfaced. Throughout his career, he served on The Board of Directors for The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and was President of the Northwest Area Council, Board of Directors and Officer for the Georgia Society of CPA's and was an honorary 40-year member of AICPA, Board of Directors at The Financial Executives Institute, Board of Directors at Atlanta Country Club, Vistage CEO member, and the Finance Committee at The Cathedral of Christ the King under Monsignor McDonough. Paul was an avid tennis player, reaching the national championship level with his doubles team from Atlanta Country Club. He was an Italian aficionado with a passion for food and an appreciation of wine. Paul enjoyed sharing these most with his friends and family. Described by those who met him once, or knew him for years, Paul was a consummate gentleman. He lead by example, ever patient, kind, and optimistic. His leadership and accomplishments in business were an important facet of his life, but his true devotion was his faith and family. You could hear the enthusiasm in his voice and see the pride on his face, smiling as he shared stories about his children and grandchildren. Happiness in Paul's eyes was being surrounded by family, as a husband, father, and grandfather. Paul was the sole survivor in a tragic car accident that took the life of his first wife and their two young children. After time spent in hospitals and physical therapy, he recovered. Paul, stayed true to his character and faith despite such adversity. He married his beloved, Mary Lynn. She brought love, admiration, and laughter to his life for 42 years. Mary Lynn, and his two daughters, Julie and Lilli, were blessings that he treasured. Paul's love and appreciation for family and tradition multiplied when he became a grandfather to Dean and Gemma. They radiated a new type of happiness and warmth. He was blessed to meet and hold his newest granddaughter, Ava, on Christmas day. The promise of his third grandchild kept his spirit alive at the end of his life. Paul will be remembered as a gracious husband, father, and grandfather. He lived a Catholic life with integrity, honesty, and generosity with a faith that never faltered. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn Lombardi; his daughters Julie Lombardi Mellon and Lillianna Lombardi Thompson; brother, Patrick Joseph Lombardi; grand- children, Dean Paul Mellon, Gemma Elizabeth Mellon, and Ava Lynn Thompson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. I have known Paul since he married my dear friend Mary Lynn. Watching their lives unfold together has been a big part of my life. From welcoming me with open arms (literally Paul was the best hugger in the world!) on my many stops at their home, to being a role model on how to raise my daughter, to being a rock for Mary Lynn and his daughters, all his pride and joy. He was the all these notes have said and more. I will forever picture him in his easy chair, newspaper in his hands, glasses perched on his nose, and peaking at a ball game with MaryLynn on the couch next to him. He will be missed greatly by his family so loved by him.

Mary Lynn, Julie , and dear sweet lilli, Kevin told me yesterday that Paul had passed away. I want you to know we are all thinking of you during this difficult time. We have very fond memories of all of you. Paul was always so kind and generous and yes the very much the gentleman. We miss you all and wish you peace and fond memories. Im so glad he got to meet lilli's new daughter Ava as I know how much he loved his girls. I'm leaving today for Ohio or I would love to be there on Saturday. God bless. I first met Paul in 1972 at Arthur Andersen & Co. when I arrived in Atlanta from the Chicago metro area. After leaving Atlanta in 1984, our paths crossed only rarely, usually at a game in South Bend. So, reading the other comments here brings back many fond memories with him and Mary Lynn during those ten plus years. Paul is perfectly described by others which I can only second. He was a "good man". His laugh was contagious and genuine - I can still hear it!

We shared good times and interests together, including an outing at a ND-Clemson game in Death Valley, the one where Joe Montana brought the Irish back in the final quarter from a certain defeat. It was only "a game" but also represents a lasting memory of our connectedness in Arthur Andersen, Notre Dame and Church.

God Bless you, Paul. A treasure for us all.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Paul's passing. I considered him a personal friend even though it was many years ago that we worked together at Sands & Company in Atlanta. He was a special person with exceptional abilities which was proven in all his endeavors. Janice and I send our sympathy and prayers out to Mary Lynn and all his family.

We were so saddened to hear of Paul's untimely death. We lived across the street from the Lombardi family at the time of the catastrophe that took Janet, David, and Lisa. The children played with my little brother and were classmates. Our hearts were broken as were all who knew this wonderful family. Paul's faith is the only thing that kept him moving forward. We are happy to know that he found love again. He will be missed by so many. Condolences from the Fleagle family.

I had the privilege of working with Paul at Sands & Company. He brought a special level of professionalis that helped us grow and prosper in the southeast. Paul was a gentleman and respected by everyone he dealt with in our business.

I was Paul's Executive Assistant for over 4 years at OI. He was truly an amazing man. His honesty, integrity and love for his family, friends and employees are beyond anything I've ever seen. I'm blessed to have witnessed such compassion for others. As Albert Einstein said, The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive and Paul was a man who certainly gave a lot. Rest in heavenly peace, Paul.

To the family of Mr. Paul Lombardi, I was truly saddened to hear of the transition of your loved one. I remember when he would call or come into the office at Williams Benator & Libby. I am the front desk receptionist that would greet him. He was such a gentle soul and I will always remember his soft, soothing voice. Though he will be missed, may the family find comfort in knowing that he is now resting peacefully in the arms of our Lord.

I send heartfelt condolences to you, Mary Lynn, to Julie and Lilli, and to all of Paul's friends and family. Despite the distance and the years, there is a strong bond of love and affection among cousins. I know that my parents (Aunt Mary and Uncle Marc) thought the world of him. And I grew up with the idea of Paul as a role model. They would join me in sending our love to you all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thank you Uncle Paul for all the countless summers you allowed Ryan and I to come up. I will never forget my first baseball game in downtown Atlanta with you, Lilli and Ryan. I went on to play softball for 8 years and loved every minute of it. You raised two beautiful young ladies I looked up to growing up and miss dearly. You will be missed.

You instinctively knew Paul was a good man, and I dearly liked him from the moment I met him. Others have already mentioned his kindness, and he truly was a kind man. I enjoyed being in his presence, and he will be missed by everyone he touched.
