Mr. Goseer was one of my favorite teachers at Shamrock High School in Decatur, Georgia in the late 60s. He gave me the confidence to pick up an instrument and learn to play it when no one believed I could. As an adult, I ran into him about 10 years after graduation, and by that time, I had learned to play yet another instrument. I told him then that I had come to appreciate the level of work he put into our band. When there was no music available for certain songs, he literally wrote the arrangements for all of the different instruments in the band. He took us to competitions, where against all odds for a brand new school, we earned superior ratings for our performances. To this day, I cannot hear Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" without feeling the excitement of our little band playing so gloriously. He wrote arrangements for Green Onions and a couple of other popular tunes that we played during marching season. In my 40s, I saw him again at a school reunion, and told him that because of him I had been in various bands all during my adult life, and had even written a few songs that we played, and that I had found out how hard it was to write arrangements for instruments that are tuned to different keys. My respect and appreciation for him lives long after he has passed from this earth! Mr. Goseer, thank you for enriching my life in so many ways with the music we love. To his family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss! He was a wonderful musician and teacher, and I will always remember him fondly.

In 1971 I arrived at Shamrock High School from Seattle Washington. I played the String Bass in Seattle. Upon arriving at Shamrock I met Mr. Goseer who was excited that I played the Bass! He was able to obtain a Bass for me and then tried to show me how to play jazz on it! I hadn't ever tried to improvise as he was doing it! He got us all improvising after a practice session. He would go around and play someone's trumpet, etc. and get them started and never did anyone say that he didn't change any mouth pieces. There was never any racial tension with Mr. Goseer! We were a band together and he was cool! I have always remembered him with such respect and fondness. May he rest in peace and may the family know he was a very special person in my life.

I was in the band at Shamrock High School 1971-74 and was a band assistant that helped plan half time shows for the marching band. Mr. Goseer and I spent many hours together and I have very fond memories of him. My condolences and prayers to the family. Deborah Southall Smith SHS 1974.
