My sincere condolences to Nolan Herndon's family. I live just four blocks from a WWII memorial dedicated at Merrill Field in Anchorage in 2004 to Army Air Corps members who helped defend Alaska by flying missions from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to Japan. My brother George Herndon, visiting me from Georgia in Sept. 2006, spotted Nolan's name engraved on the impressive, polished memorial wall. I took several photos last week of the memorial and will email them to Nolan's interested family members.

While serving as the Aiken County Veterans Affairs Officer, I had the pleasure of befriending Herndon and his lovely wife, Julia. Herndon, who was an honorable man and an American hero, will be truly missed but never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers remain with his family.

What an honor it was to read that you were one of the "Doolittle Raiders" during WWII. You were a true American aviator and warrior who served our country with honor during very troubled times. May God take you under his wings for eternity. My condolence to the entire family.
