Robert Snead Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Wednesday, June 27, 2012, COL (Ret.) Robert S. Snead, 76, husband of Mrs. Betty Snead. COL Snead was born in Louisiana. He received his Bachelors Degree from Centenary College and his Masters Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. COL Snead had a highly distinguished career as a US Army Signal Corps officer. He accepted a commission in the United States Army in 1959 and served two tours in Vietnam. Over the course of his 32 year career, he served as chief of the Presidential Support Office, Defense Communications Agency; command at all levels from platoon to brigade; president of the communications-electronics test board at Fort Gordon; and chief of staff for 7th Signal Command at Fort Ritchie , MD. During his active military service, COL Snead consistently set an example of high standards for all to emulate. Upon his retirement, his service to the Signal Regiment continued in a manner deserving of the highest recognition. After he left active duty, he became the operations manager and the program manager for the General Dynamics resident school at Fort Gordon. COL Snead was also deeply committed to service to Signal Soldiers and their families. He was president of the Greater Augusta-Fort Gordon Chapter of the Association of The United States Army (AUSA), an association committed to supporting the soldier. He served two years as the Georgia AUSA president and was selected as the Third Region's AUSA executive vice-president. He also served for 12 years as a member of the Metro Augusta Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee and was selected by Georgia's governor to serve on his military advisory council. COL Snead was a charter member of the Signal Corps Regimental Association and a key supporter of its activities. Because of COL Snead's exceptional service and commitment to the Signal Regiment and its soldiers he was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Signal Regiment in 2001. Family members in addition to his wife include sons: Derek Snead and wife Terri, Preston Snead and wife Ann Marie; daughter: Tracy Fee and husband David and Julie Kennedy; 8 grandchildren: Megan Snead Goldberg, Austin Snead, Tyler Snead, Marshall Snead, Isabel Fee, David Fee, Frannie Kennedy and Emerson Snead. My deepest condolences for your loss. Bob was a wonderful person to know. He was an awesome leader and I have great memories of a few significant things that he did on my behalf and I can't thank him enough for "favor" for he had a heart of gold in my eyes. May he rest in peace until we all meet again.

I was very sad when a friend told me that COL Snead has passed away. He was the nicest boss I ever had. Although he was a COL and I was an Edit Clerk at the CE Board, Ft Gordon, he was always friendly and helpful. May the Lord strengthen you all and hold you in the hollow of His hand until you meet again.

The world has lost another great hero today. As I look up to the sky with tears streaming down my face, I am able to smile knowing that he made his way home. Say hi to dad for me Col. Snead. You've left behind a great family of friends and relatives that are so proud of you. It was a privilege to know you. I am a better man for it. Thanks.

I don't know that anyone will really understand just how much Col. Snead meant to me. There were many positive traits he had that inspired me in the absence of my father. I know my own dad only through my own 30 year old fading memories and the stories people tell. Col. Snead is one of the people who told me those stories. He was a great man. He was one of the people I've known that figured out life and by GOD he was good at it! Was able to get this message to him a few months ago and it really brightened his day. His love for his family was unconditional. ALWAYS. He was a dedicated father and he loved his friends and family more than anyone will ever know! Some of the many lessons he taught are: Be diligent, Love your family, Learn from your past, Live your life while your alive.

I will never forget how Col. Snead used to sing this and whistle the tune all the time.
http://youtu.be/QzHIn5S-RbY (Chattanooga Choo Choo)
Part of the reason I like this kind of music is that it seems the Snead family were always listening to big band and show tunes or something like it on the radio. Anytime I hear it I'll always think of him.

I had to cry a little more at the loss of a great man. I cry not for him, for he has the greatest prize of all. Instead, I cry for his family. I cry for the friends he's left behind. I cry for this country who lost one of its greatest patriots. I cry because we will never hear his voice again and never see his smile. I pray, oh Lord, that you will give us the means to hold these memories until we must depart this world as well. Few of us will ever have the impact on as many lives as did Col. Snead. As I read through the obituary and comments left by those who knew him, I stand tall and proud as I join the ranks to sing the chorus of how amazing he was. I pray also that his friends and family can find a way to sing through their tears with me to send him on his way. I hope to one day tell my children stories about a true patriot who lives inside my heart and many others. I hope my stories about him inspire my boys to do good and be trustworthy. I am so glad to know how proud he was of me. In the absence of my own father, I always sought the approval of father figures around me. Of all the father figures I knew in the area, Col. Snead was the most polished and dignified one around! Though all the approval I've received from my surrogate father figures has not gone unnoticed, they all pale in comparison to the approval I got from him. I know Col. Snead figured life out a long time ago. For someone who knows how to do good at life to tell you how proud they are of you is something to never be forgotten. I pray I never forget it; ever. I also pray that God will grant me the strength and conviction to continue living up to the level he was once so proud of in me.
Col. Snead, sir, I salute you.
