Mike "Big Mike" Ala

Mike "Big Mike" Ala, 89, of Aurora passed away on Saturday, September 08, 2007 at Provena Mercy Medical Center. He was born May 19, 1918 in Coal City, IL. He was the son of Rose and Michael Ala.

Mike grew up in Coal City, IL and moved to Aurora in the 1940's. Mike proudly served in the U.S. Army with the 4th Infantry Division. He was on the first wave of D Day at Omaha Beach. Mike received two purple hearts and was honorably mentioned along with his picture in the book Citizen Soldiers written by Stephen E. Ambrose. Mike worked for the Chicago Labors Union as a Laborer until his retirement in 1974. Mike was a member of the VFW in Montgomery. He also enjoyed Chicago sports (Cubs and Bears) and looked forward to watching every game.

Mike is survived by his children, Kenneth (Donna) Ala of North Aurora, Denise (Dick) Decker of Novinger, MO, Sherry (Dave) Barrick of Necedah, WI; his nine grandchildren, Kenneth (Becky) Ala, Brian (Jenny) Ala, Melissa Decker, Andrea (Richard) King, Monika (George) Williams, Heather Brey, Shelly Brey, Patrick (Jamie) Brey, and Aaron Brey; 15 great grandchildren; his sister, Eleanor Cantu of Coal City, IL; and his special friend, Sylvia.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and his two brothers, Dominic and Johnny.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at 7 PM at THE DALEIDEN MORTUARY. Rev Roy Frye will officiate. Interment will be at a later date.
