It's been a long time brother but I never forget you not a day goes by I don't think about you when I look at my daughter we buried you the day my daughter was born which makes it a very bittersweet day I remember the beautiful day of my daughter being born and the day that we buried a very good man and a man I considered a friend of mine. I remember meeting you the first time at central intake your attitude and smile were infectious and became instant friends from then. It's hard to believe it's been this long since we've lost you but we go on day by day we do our jobs and that's how we salute and honor you thank you for your sacrifice you will never be forgotten George not in my life and not in my family god be with you and God be with your family I know you're watching over them and I think they know that too one day we will meet again my friend till then you keep the peace up there.

I want to dedicate this poem to Officer George Cortez:
Slowly he rises, puts his feet on the floor and for a moment he wonders what his shift has in store. Just another day, its come that time he must again face the world of crime. Hours have passed after well earned rest, so he takes a shower and dons his vest. Proudly he buttons his uniform blue
tightens his belt, and laces his shoes.
Then last of all, his badge and pin
with St Michael's help he knows he will win. He sits and waits, then comes the call 911 Fear cast aside, the fight has begun. He drives at top speed to help those in need then silently prays God be with me today.
To some it means nothing, just a fight in a bar or to arrest a drunk driver at the wheel of a car. A robbery gone wrong at a grocery store, or saying, I'm sorry... you're baby's not coming home anymore.
You wonder sometimes how at night he can sleep, after things he deals with, things he sees on the streets. He'd jump into a house fire without second thought, scale walls and run blocks till a suspect is caught. Thinks nothing of wrestling a man with a gun Yet, he's looked down upon cursed and abused by some.
Every day he will put his life on the line to make things better for people like you. So he's not "just a cop" but a hero to me always my angel in blue.
***Rest in Peace George****

George,
We just wanted to stop by and say hi and we miss you! The other day Kaylee was with us and we stopped by your "Special Place" as the boys call it and visited for a while. The boys started wrestling again this time at Deer Valley with Jake & Drew, they like it a lot and are in good hands. They went skiing this past weekend and did real good, they both loved it and had a good time. They miss you very much also, but rest assured they are being taken care of and I know you are watching over things. Tiffany is still going to school, I don't think she wants the title of "beauty school dropout"! She is doing good and like us all misses you very much.
Take care for now,and keep everything safe there and here. Remember "Elbows out, side to side"!
We love you!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Happy Birthday George!
Koltan's flag football team ended the season 8-0 and you must be proud of the way he played. He really loves football and we know where that comes from. Even Coach Taylor watched some of his game at Centennial one Saturday. Gunner started playing flag and it's funny to watch them, they are like a bunch of bees buzzing around! The Coyotes are undefeated so far, nationally ranked and are going after their 4th consecutive state title. Take care and keep watch over us, we miss you very much!

It has been a long 2 years and 2 days since you were taken from us. I went to your memorial service and it was beautiful. Even though its been two years i still can't believe the fact that you are really gone. I seen you around a few times and its so sad to believe a young officer such as your self paid the ultimate price for being a hero.
You will be forever remembered in my heart and you will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved you or even those who never really knew you. During my career i have know 7 officers that have died in the line of duty. We all bleed blue and you will always be an angel in all of our hearts.

It has been one year sir since your sacrifice. We remember it sadly, an event that simply will not be forgotten. The world we know is still less without you, but we can now see the influence your efforts have made, you opened up our eyes to many things as a society and as individuals. Thank you, I wish we could have done it at a much lesser cost, but that I guess this is a debate better left to you in heaven. For those of us still here, bless you for your continuing policing of us as we all so desperately need, especially during the hard times. We pray that God will place a calming hand upon your boys, your wife, family members, fellow officers and friends. Thank you officer George Cortez.

George,
Well son there was a wonderful memorial by the City of Phoenix on February 11th honoring you and several other fallen heros. Your name is on a glass block at the memorial just off Jefferson St. and 2nd Ave!
Then on March 5th you again were honored at the 100 Club of Arizona's annual banquet. It was a touching ceremony and Tiffany received your an End of Watch streamer that is like the one that was placed on the PD Honor Guard flag. I am now at my new job and I know you are laughing! Watch over us and till we meet again we will always be thinking of you!

My deepest sympathies. I have been thinking about George and Tiffany so much. I was touched when I heard Tiffany on the morning radio show. Then my husband and I did the Memorial Ride, where I was able to give her my personal condolences. I have since than ran into her around town, where I was given word of another young persons passing. I feel like God is telling me something. Love my husband more, be nicer to him. I don't know. Life is so fragile. It can be so short. In the blink of an eye it can all change.

Although I didn't know George personally, I saw him in passing a few times at Cactus Park precinct. Everytime I saw him I remember thinking to myself, "that guy is always smiling." There are absolutely no words to express the grief the Phoenix Police Dept feels for the loss of Officer George Cortez. God has an amazing way of testing our Faith...this is one of those tests...thank you George, for all that you are!
Tiffany, stay strong, although George is no longer here on Earth, you have two little George's to mold into beautiful young men. For it is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all! Time will never fill the void in your life, but hopefully you'll find comfort in knowing that George is by your side along the way...

Dear Tiffany, Koltan, and Gunnar:
When I think about George I can only remember fun times and someone that always made me laugh. He had that attractive personality that you already knew so well that made you wanna hang out with. What can I say, when I knew I had a weekend off from work (which was rare)and wanted to go out, who better to call. When I worked off duty in South Mountain during the day, I would always give him a call. Thinking back to the academy and how hard it seemed, I always envied how George, only 21 and had a wife and two children, got through training and never complained. Boy, did I have it easy.
I am deeply sorry for your loss. He will always be remembered as a hero. I will be here for you guys. Please contact me if you need anything.
To George:
What else can I say bro? You have so much to be proud of: two beautiful children and a wife that is unbelivable strong minded. She had so much courage getting up and speaking at your service. It just showed what a wonderful person she is and you did real well holding on to her.
We had some good times with Class 399. I'll be thinking about you everytime I put on that uniform. I've never had the opportunity of riding with you out on the streets, but it looks like we'll be ridin together a lot now. Watch over us and see you out on the beat brother. Godspeed.

We will just say Tiffany please know that anything you need please be sure to call no matter day or night. Koltan and Gunner are your pride and joy, I can see how much you love them and I am sure they know too. Follow your heart and good will come. There were no words to describe the emotions we are feeling for George, and especially you and your two boys. Autumn and I love you all very much.

Tiffany and boys,
My heart aches for your loss. you are in my prayers. Here is a little something from the grief group I have been attending since I lost my husband recently.
(I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and the days before that too. I think of you in silence, and I speak your name with pride, as I relive the memories of living by your side. Your memories are my keepsake with which we'll never part, God has you in His keeping I have you in my heart.)
God bless you,
Silvia Smith

Dear Tiffany, I was married to a police officer for 24 years, so I know you have experienced your worst nightmare. People like me reaching out will, to some extent, be a lifeline, but no one really knows the sorrow you feel. Only time. Even then, I don't believe time "heals all wounds," as they say, but I hope it brings us to a place where the wounds are less raw. You have two beautiful children to take care of and lift your spirits. Just remember you have others around that will help you and give yourself time to grieve, truly grieve. Unfortunately, I do speak from experience as I buried my son, at too young an age, on July 27th. I hope that our concern and support gives you some comfort. I do believe George will watching you and his sons from this day forward. God bless you and your babies.

George, for now you are an Angel meant to watch over your family, to protect them for eternity. You are well protected in heaven's wall of blue. You will always be the brightest star shining in the dark velvet sky.

THERE ARE NO WORDS TO EXPRESS MY SYMPATHY FOR YOUR LOSS. YOUR HUSBAND SACRIFICED HIS OWN LIFE TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THE LIFES OF OTHERS. I AM MARRIED TO A POLICE SRGNT AND WHEN THINGS LIKE THIS HAPPEN, IT HITS TOO CLOSE TO HOME. I HONESTLY CAN NOT SAY "I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL" BECAUSE I HAVE NOT GONE THROUGH WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH. I CAN SAY THAT I DO KNOW THAT YOU ARE HURTING AND THAT IT IS O.K FOR YOU TO CRY AND EXPRESS YOUR EMOTIONS. PLEASE LOOK TO YOUR BOYS FOR YOUR COMFORT AS WELL AS YOUR FAMILY, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, GOD'S LOVING HANDS. MY THOUGHTS AND MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOU AND THE BOYS AS WELL AS TO ALL WHO KNEW GEORGE CORTEZ.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU

I am the wife of a retired Phoenix police officer and mother of 2 police officers - one for Scottsdale and one for DPS. As I watched the funeral on Friday, I grieved with you and your family. Words cannot express what I can only imagine you are feeling. I ache for you and feel your pain with you. I cry with you also.
Please accept my family's sincere condolences on your loss and know that George will always remain in your heart. So very sorry.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Cortez Family. I can feel the hurt and pain that was expressed by Tiffany during this sensless act. To lose a fine 23 year old young man like that will never make sense. I only wish that Tiffany, Koltan, and gunner will always know that their Father and husband died while protecting others. That is a measure of a true man with a great loving heart. May God Bless you all!

Koltan and Gunner~
I just wanted to take some time and tell you how awesome your Daddy was! He loved you guys so much! You and your Mommy were the world to him! Nothing else mattered as long as he had you guys. He was an example for many on what a real Dad should be like! Take care of Mommy! You guys are the world to her as well!
Tiffany, I am so glad that our families have become close. Even though the similarities are sort of weird, we know that it is all part of the big picture. I am glad that we can laugh together but then also be able to cry together. You have 2 beautiful boys who will help you feel George's presence everyday!~ Just squeeze those crazy boys! Even though they are only 2 and 4, they will be your biggest comfort!
We Love your family! Things will be hard and awkward for a while as we saw today… but little by little you will grow from them! As you know we are here for you 24-7.
P.S. We have to find a new hang out!

Dear Tiffany, I watched every minute of the Memorial Service. You are a strong woman & I know you are going to be a source of strengh and inspiration for your sons Gunner & Colton. Thank you for sharing your life & times with George with us. I loved all the beautiful photographs.
I am so glad that George gave his life to Christ only weeks before, & that you both were receiving spiritual guidance at Church of Joy.
Remember, Tiffany.. this is just the beginning with the Lord. He sees your pain, & loves you and your sons very much. God & George are watching over you & the boys every day.
Tell the Lord about your pain & He will be there for you. Come unto me all who are burdened & I will give you rest, for my yolk is easy & my burden is light.
Don't forget to talk to Jesus... He is your best friend, & now George's too!
My love & prayers to you, Tiffany.
