Obituary of Larry Lee Hogan
Larry Hogan, retired Air Force and Vietnam War veteran, died Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
Born January 18, 1935, in Troy, N.C., Larry was the son of Dolan and Frances Hogan.
Growing up in the North Carolina piedmont, Larry - nicknamed Pete by his family - developed a love of mountain music from his grandmother and he was known to break out in song or whistle at any moment. He also put his vocal talents to use as a caller for Western square dancing groups.
After graduating from Troy High School, Larry joined the Air Force in 1954 and served in Italy, Vietnam and Germany before retiring to Sumter, S.C., in 1975.
While he was stationed in Mobile, Ala., Larry met and married the love of his life, Bernice Ankerson in 1960.
After his military service, Larry worked in the service department at McLaughlin Ford in Sumter for a number of years.
With an engineer's brain and an artist's soul, Larry could build or fix anything. He also made dulcimers and clocks and painted seascapes that he gave to family and friends.
A gentle giant, Larry was a devoted son, a loving husband and a doting father.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Larry is survived by his daughter, Jan, sister-in-law, Marie Ankerson Bensch, nieces, nephews and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law, Essie Lee Ankerson, and his brother-in-law, Harold Bensch.
A military service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org).
