Richard Roy Heber

Beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Richard "Dick" Heber passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 27th at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by parents Roy and Edna Everingham Heber, siblings George, Miles and Alice Gordon and wife Evelyn. Richard is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Steve and Lisa, grandson Kyle, his wife Shellena, great granddaughter Evangeline and granddaughters Molly and Emily, all of Bakersfield.
Richard was born in Hutsonville, Illinois in 1919 and his family moved permanently to California in 1923. He served as senior class president at Kern County Union High School (renamed Bakersfield High School in 1945). After two years at Bakersfield College Richard went on to graduate from the University of California, Berkeley on a baseball scholarship. He served in the Navy during World War II then completed his Master's Degree in History at the University of Southern California before embarking on a teaching career that spanned nearly 40 years, most of which was spent at North High School. Richard and his wife Evelyn traveled extensively throughout their retirement and he served as a docent at Pioneer Village and as a volunteer with the Junior Golf Program. Richard enjoyed playing golf with his friends, attending Dodger baseball games and spending time with his dearly loved grandchildren.
Mr. Heber will be missed and remembered by countless former students, friends, family and others whose lives he touched.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Richard Heber will be held on Saturday, March 8th at 10:00 AM in the Memorial Chapel at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Boulevard. A reception will follow the service at Bakersfield Country Club.
