Dr. Peter Jurtshuk Jr.

1929 - 2017

Peter Jurtshuk, Jr. Ph.D. was born on July 28, 1929 in NYC and died on July 9, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rebecca Jones, his son, Peter Jurtshuk, III, his daughter, Larissa Jurtshuk, Au.D., 1 sister, Tania Sampson (nee Jurtshuk, M.D.), 1 sister in law Ann York (nee Jones), and many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Jurtshuk and Peter Jurtshuk, Sr. Peter graduated from Stuvyesant High School in 1947, NYU Washington Square College with a BS in 1951, Creighton University with a MS in 1953, University of Maryland College Park with a PhD. in Microbiology in1957. He did a Post Doc at the University of Wisconsin in Madison at the Enzyme Institute from 1959-1963. He taught microbiology at University of Texas at Austin from 1963-1969 before joining the faculty at University of Houston in 1970. He retired in 2011 and was granted emeritus status in 2012. Many students he taught have gone on to teaching and research positions around the world. Pall Bearers: Richard D. Knapp, Ph.D., Gary D. Cherneski, Lawrence R. Williams, Ph.D., Nagindra Prashad, Ph.D., Michael Terraco, Ph.D., and James M. Farrell, Lt. Col (Retired). Honorary Pall Bearers are: William Taylor and Larry Moreland. Friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation with the family on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546, 281-992-7200. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Glenn Young officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 P.M. at Pilot Grove Cemetery in Yoakum TX. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made in his name to Clear Lake Baptist Church Food Pantry, Make a Wish Foundation or Gary Sinise Foundation.
