L.J. Dick Seipp Obituary

L.J. "Dick" Seipp

LaVergne J. "Dick" Seipp, age 90, born June 14, 1924, in O'Fallon, Ill., passed away Tuesday night, Feb. 24, 2015, at St Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

Dick was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church and a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 4239. He graduated from O'Fallon Twp. High School and volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served during World War II on the USS Mount Olympus, a communication and command ship in the South Pacific where he was a radio operator. He was awarded the Commendation Medal for excellent service. As a young man, Dick began working as a milkman for Quality Dairy. Then, in 1961, together with his wife, Norma, they started JMJ Sanitation. They were in business for 29 years until Dick retired in 1990. Also, in 1961, he began a long and successful career as an umpire. He was inducted into the Southside League Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame and into the Mont-Clair Baseball League Hall of Fame. Dick was a fun and uplifting grandfather. His life was an example of faith and love for God.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Frances, nee Siegel, Siepp, whom he married on May 13, 1948 in Blackjack, Ill., and who passed away May 30, 2011; parents, John A. and Mary Rose, nee Zeisset, Seipp; his brother, Robert Seipp, his twin brother, Melvin Seipp; and his brother-in-law, Joe Heumann.

Surviving are his five children, Stephen of Collinsville, Craig of O'Fallon, Mark of Lewisville, Texas, Barbara Ann of O'Fallon and Robb (Pam) of Ladera Ranch, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria (Leo) Artiano of Dallas, Texas, sister, Hope Heumann of Atascadero, Calif.; and his sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Seipp of O'Fallon, and Loretta Seipp of Madison, Ill.

Dick preferred memorials to be in the form of Masses to St. Clare Church, knowing he needed prayers more than flowers. Condolences may be extended to the family by visiting www.wfh-ofallon.com.

Mark and Family
I had the pleasure of knowing your father through his years as an umpire and a Life Member of the Southwest Illinois Umpires Association, for which I serve as President. I first worked with your father at Southside Park in Belleville doing men's FastPitch Softball. Many games would follow. Dick was well liked by his fellow umpires and was always greeted by "What's up youngster" something everyone of his fellow umpires will always remember.
Our thoughts and Prayers are with you and your family at this time.
Keep them and laughing Dick and let them know you got the call right. All you have to do is flash that smile!!!
