Winifred Sasyk

Winifred L. Sasyk, 85, of Granite City, Ill., formerly of Madison, Ill., born on April 20, 1925, in Bonne Terre, Mo., passed from this life on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at Gateway Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Sasyk was a life long homemaker and mother. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madison, Ill., where she enjoyed many hours of organizing luncheons for the St. Ann's Society. Winifred was involved in politics all her life with her husband Mike. She gave many years to the Madison County community and enjoyed the fellowship as well as conversations about local politics with others. In her free time she loved to shop and spend time with her family.

Winifred was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Sasyk, whom she married on Aug. 17, 1951, and who passed from this life on July 1, 2001; her parents, Harold and Barbara, nee Chanda, Edrington; two sisters, Barbara Lee Carney and Patricia Bielicki.

Surviving are her daughters, Barbara (David) Borage of Granite City, Ill., and Karen Davis of Belleville, Ill.; son, Michael Terry (Barb) Sasyk of Florissant, Mo.; six grandchildren, Marissa Pirtle, Kellen Davis, Brandon Caple, Jamie Prange, David Borage and Damon Sasyk; six great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Devin, Jesalin, Bryton, Kamron and Hallei; sister, Loretta (Ed) Rakowski of Granite City, Ill.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Masses.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill. A prayer service will be held Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Funeral: A mass celebration will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1621 10th Street in Madison, Ill., with Father Elmer Empinado officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.
