George Stabler Obituary

George Merritt Stabler

1943-2012 George Merritt Stabler, 69, a long-time resident of Hollis, N.H., who recently moved to Middlebury, Vt., died on November 11, 2012 in Middlebury of complications due to diabetes.

He was born July 1, 1943, in Waltham, Mass., to Howard Parker Stabler and Margaret Van Alstyne Stabler. He grew up in Williamstown, and attended Williamstown public schools, graduating in the high school class of 1961. He received a BA in 1965 from Harvard University, studied computer-aided design at the Rhode Island School of Design and University of Manchester in England, and received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University.

He worked as a software engineer for Prime Computers and Apollo Computers in Massachusetts before joining Workstation Solutions in Nashua, N.H. He was subsequently employed by Oracle in Nashua, N.H., and retired in 2010.

He was quick-witted, with an engaging sense of humor. As an amateur artist, he was a devotee of M.C. Escher and Wassily Kandinsky. He also had fondness for the work of Edward Gorey and Bill Waterson as well as the music of Charles Ives and Sergey Prokofiev. He delighted in the birds that came to his feeder.

He is survived by his children, Benjamin Stabler of Austin, Texas and Elizabeth D. Stabler of Hollis, N.H.; his sister Elizabeth Stabler of Middlebury, Vt., and his best friend Christine T. Hayward of Portland, Ore.

He was predeceased in January 2012 by his brother Robert Coleman Stabler.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service is scheduled for Dec. 8 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Nashua, NH. Donations in George's memory may be made to the Audubon Society.

Not sure what to say?

February 18, 2013

It's easy to say They don't make 'em like that anymore, but in George's case, it's true. In all the years that have passed since we worked together, I've never met anyone with his breadth of intellect and talent, to say nothing of his skill at finding that one errant instruction, even when it was obscured by a cloud of cigarette smoke.

George was a great teacher in his own way. I remember bouncing into his office and after a grump or two, he would take the time to explain things and send me off to read the code. He is one of the individuals that made working at Apollo special for me. Thanks George.
