John Foster

1921 - 2015 PITTSFIELD John E. Foster, 94, of Osceola St., passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Springside Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Facility. Born in Pittsfield on January 24, 1921 the son of John and Lena Nash Foster Jr., he attended the former Pomeroy School. John was a dairy and sheep farmer, he was employed at Berkshire Life for 20 years as the head of maintenance and grounds, and for 10 years at the Lenox Club as the head of maintenance and grounds. He also served the Town of Richmond in many capacities such as Tree Warden, Dog Officer, Fence Viewer, and Constable. He was a deputy in the Berkshire County Sheriff's office. He served as a member of the State Guard mounted division and was a Civilian Defense Plane Counter. He was a 45 year member of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department. A past president of the Berkshire Antique Engine Club, a member of the 1923- Star Auto Club, he enjoyed traveling extensively, playing the harmonica and most importantly loved being with his family. John was a founding member of the Berkshire Community Church, he donated the land that church is built on. Through the church he was very active, including traveling to Metla Katla, Alaska where he helped build a church for the Isimshim Indians, who in turn made him an honorary brave. John married the former Mary Louise Lindsey on May 12, 1945, she passed away March 15, 2015. He is survived by his beloved family, son, Steven Foster of Richmond, daughters, Mary Beth Tart and Susan Davis both of Pittsfield, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and his sister, Lois Dartt of Scotia, NY. He was predeceased by his daughter, Helen Dupont and sister, Hazel Johnston. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Mr. John E. Foster will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 10a.m. at the Berkshire Community Church with the Rev. Angela Buchauer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Northeast Cemetery in Richmond, MA. Calling hours will be held Monday from 4 to 7p.m. at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Donations in his memory are suggested to the Berkshire Community Church in care of the funeral home.
