Jimmy Leal Obituary
Jimmy was born Jan. 14, 1940, in Yoakum, Texas, to Santiago and Leonora Leal. He moved to Big Spring when he was young, where he worked at the Settles Hotel, the bowling alley, and various other jobs. Jimmy served active duty in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965 and was deployed to Germany. Upon his return, he transitioned to the Army Reserve, beginning his civil service career on Webb Air Force Base's flight line. In 1969, Jimmy was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class. When the air base closed, he continued his civil service career at the VA Hospital, where he advocated for fellow veterans in his role as Admissions Clerk. Jimmy retired in 1995 after more than thirty years of service, filling his time playing golf, tinkering with projects around the house, and traveling to Ruidoso with his wife, Rhonda. He attended East Side Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda; step-son, Troy Tompkins and wife, Dana; step-daughter, Tonya Graves and husband, Mike; daughters, Delilah Gomez, Lisa Leal-Tate and husband, James; and son, Jeff Leal and wife, Rose; nine grandchildren, Katie Wilkerson and husband, Jared, Macy Graves, Matthew Tompkins, Tyler Graves, Meagan Graves, Austin Tate, Alyssa Tate, Chris Salazar and wife, Riza, and Valerie Salazar; three great-grandchildren; brothers, David Leal and wife, Betty, Albert Leal, Gilbert Leal and wife, Mary Ann, and Mark Leal; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Leal; and step-daughter, Tricia Tompkins.
The family suggests memorials to Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home or Compass Hospice 1900 S. Gregg St.
