James Baker Obituary

James Douglas "JB or Jim" Baker, 68, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on October 7, 2025, in his hometown. Born on April 14, 1957, in Birmingham, Jim lived a life defined by dedication, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
For over 23 years, Jim worked at SPOC Automation in Trussville, where he was known not only for his technical expertise but also for his deep sense of camaraderie and mentorship. He brought the same passion to teaching motorcycle safety at Montevallo for an impressive 30 years. Whether guiding new riders or training electrical technicians, Jim loved to teach and took pride in helping others grow. His attention to detail and high work ethic made him a respected figure among colleagues and students alike.
Jim believed that everyone he encountered-whether through work, church, or family-was part of his extended family. He often spoke of "being family," embracing those around him with warmth and sincerity. His positive attitude and zest for life were infectious; he lived fully and pushed the limits with joy and purpose.
He found spiritual grounding in his faith and was deeply connected to both Homewood Church of Christ and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Jim knew his God and carried that assurance with him throughout his life.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy Funderburk; his sister Maria Baker (Doug Smith); brothers Sam Baker (Mandy) and Tom Baker; stepdaughter Meredith Funderburk (Scott Weaver); stepson Konrad Funderburk (Nobue Hagiwara); stepgrandchildren Satsuki, Yumiko, and Takumi Weaver; nephew Clay Smith (Katie); as well as other nieces and nephews who cherished his presence in their lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James "Jim" Norris Baker Jr. and Roselyn "Roz" Craddock Baker.
Jim was a gift to all who knew him-steadfast in character, generous with knowledge, and full of heart. May his memory bring comfort to those who were fortunate enough to be part of his journey. A Memorial Service will be held on October 24, 2025, at 02:00 PM at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church 3775 Crosshaven Drive, with reception following.
Donations may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 3775 Crosshaven Drive, Vestavia Hills, AL 35223, marked for the Memorial Garden; or to the charity of your choice.

I was in band with Jim from 1972 to 1975. He was a great guy even back then. Friend, mentor, Protector, defender, study buddy. Just so many words to describe him. He was the first to send me flowers on Valentine's day.His whole family adopted me and took me under their wing. The world has lost a good man. Rest in peace Jim, until we meet again.

Jim and I were in band together from 1972 to 1975. He was a great guy even back then. Friend, mentor, study buddy, protector, defender, just so many words that describe him. He was the first guy to send me flowers on Valentine's day. I was adopted by his whole family and taken under their wing. I'm glad I was able to speak to him a couple of times over the past few years and catch up on life events. Rest in peace Jim, I'll see you on the other side.
