Arlie was born June 7, 1910, in Forsyth, Mont., the son of Arthur and Katie (Mailey) Markley. He graduated from Montana State College in Bozeman in 1934 with a bachelor of science degree in architecture. Arlie served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to Bismarck in 1938 but returned yearly to the Markley family home near Jordan, Mont. He worked for the Montana Highway Commission for several years and then was employed as a road design engineer for the North Dakota Highway Department from 1938 until his retirement in 1975.

He loved to draw, design and build. Evidence of his design work can be seen throughout Bismarck, all of North Dakota and Montana and most notably his house that he designed and built in Bismarck. Arlie was a member of the BPOE (Elks), American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Patrick Hallock; his grandchildren, Mark Hallock and Patricia (Barry) Schiefelbein; and his sister, Rosa May Billing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma (Barbie) Markley; his parents, Arthur and Katie Markley; and his three brothers, Harley, Hammer and James.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Dakota Zoo.
