RALEIGH - Lorenz Loeb, 78, Raleigh, died March 24, 2010, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday, March 27, at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Raleigh, with the Rev. Daniel Berg as celebrant and the Rev. Gary Benz as concelebrant. Burial will be in St. Gertrude Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. CDT today at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Raleigh, with a Knights of Columbus parish rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a parish vigil. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Lorenz was born April 9, 1931, in Grant County, to Lorenz Sr. and Emma (Ternes) Loeb. He attended various boarding schools until the death of his father when he needed to return to the farm. After high school, he was a pitcher for the Raleigh Cubs. On Oct. 6, 1952, he married Emma Riehl in Carson. A love for nature and the land, Lorenz was a farmer for many years, until his health forced him to retire. Driving school bus for 45 years, Lorenz was awake early each day to start his route. Very mechanically inclined, he enjoyed doing mechanic work all his life, having his own mechanic shop after leaving the farm.
Bowling, shooting pool and fishing were some of Lorenz's favorite hobbies. He was a member of the Flasher Knights of Columbus. Lorenz loved to sing. He sang in the church choir, especially enjoying the old German songs and he and his brother would sing for weddings and funerals. Lorenz learned about computers, even rebuilding his own. Family was important to Lorenz. He enjoyed the times spent together and those memories will be treasured.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma Loeb, Raleigh; four sons, Lawrence Jr., Bismarck, Myron (Amy), Raleigh, Clyde (Pam), Longmont, Colo., and Darren, Raleigh; three daughters, Della Rae (Doug) Granrud, Beverly (Stephen) Schneider and Geralyn (Emil) Kirschenmann, all of Bismarck; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pauline Deichert and Leona (Mike) Dirk, both of Fargo.
Lorenz was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ed (Emily) and Pete (Katherine); sisters, Regina (Jake) Blotsky, Florence (Bert) Bachmeier, Eva (Tony) Kopp and Marie (Tony) Dirk; grandson, Tyler Loeb; and brother-in-law, Ben Deichert.
