With faith and fortitude, we sorrowfully announce the peaceful passing of beloved Michael Ray Simmons on Sunday February 2 at his home. His life to anyone who knew him was truly pure and unrivaled, and his gracious memory sustains all who loved him in this great loss. His life was beyond words, and a masterpiece that defined a soul that aspires us to be as reassuring with each other as Michael was with us, and a cherished life that inspires us with his accepting and unwavering love of others. Michael is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary Witcher Simmons and John Calvin Simmons, step father Wifred Simmons; his first wife Elinor Louise Simmons, son David Brooks, grandson Dagan Brooks; sister in law Pamela Simmons, brothers in law Barry Hodges and Bill Donohoe, nieces Destiney Hodges and Kayla Simmons, and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Michael is survived by his wife Katherine Simmons and her children Ron and Mary Lynn, granddaughter Megan (Michael) Brooks, and great grandchildren Alayna and Jaden. Michael was one of nine siblings, and survived by sisters Linda Donohoe, Marie Simmons, Jean Bayer, Bonnie Hodges, and Vera (Daryl) Johnson, and brothers Henry (Beth), David (Beth), and Carl Simmons. He is survived by aunts Geraldine Price, Leevene Witcher, and Shirley Witcher, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. For contributions in his memory, Michael had requested Rehobeth Methodist Church in Wirtz, Virginia, or Good Samaritan Hospice in Roanoke, Virginia. A memorial service was conducted on Wednesday February 5, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Anthony Budzik officiating. Family is served by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
