BRIAN CARROLL Obituary

CARROLL, Brian Cushing 79, of Brewster, MA, passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2017 surrounded by family following a long illness. Brian was born to Dr. Francis B. and Helen (Collins) Carroll in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1937. He graduated from Newton High School, Newton, MA, class of 1955. He attended the University of Notre Dame, and Tufts Medical School. After a brief tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force, he began his medical career as an anesthesiologist. He moved to Hopkinton, NH in 1972, and became the first Chief of Emergency Services at Concord Hospital. In 1980, he opened Family Physicians of Hopkinton (later Family Tree Health Care), and cared for the people in his community for the remainder of his career. He was the beloved husband for 54 years of Lois (Lane) Carroll, loving father of James G. Carroll of Springfield, MA, F. Brian Carroll and his wife Brooke of Gaithersburg, MD, the late Andrew J. Carroll of Hopkinton, NH, David L. Carroll and his wife Taylor of Epping, NH, and Jennifer Lane Bockius and her husband Greg of Hopkinton, NH. He leaves his cherished grandchildren (who know him as Cush): Andrew, Zanaya, Molly, Donovan, Amelia, Liam, and Gwenna Rose. He was the loving brother of Joan (Carroll) Beggs and her husband John of Naples, FL, and John Carroll and his wife Karen of Orleans, MA. Brian also leaves behind countless other family and friends that were touched by his life. He will be missed for his compassionate demeanor, dry wit, and boundless curiosity. He was a gifted physician, with a calm bedside manner that allowed him to suture a wound with the expertise of a seamstress (but somehow never quite found the ability to sew on a button). In retirement, the construction of boats, furniture, stone walls, and musical instruments filled his free time. Travel, walks on the beach, playing music, and the company of Lois, his beloved wife, partner and friend brought him great joy. His near mythical ability to make scrambled eggs, his boundless ability to amuse his grandchildren, and the reckless abandon with which he washed dishes will be sorely missed. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, February 21st at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, MA. A funeral mass will be held on February 22nd at 11 am at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster, MA. A celebration of Brian's life will be held within the next two weeks in Hopkinton, NH. Details on social media to follow. In honor of Brian we ask that you look for humor in difficult situations, follow your passions, and above all else, be kind to others. Dear Lois and family, I just found out about Brian's death. The last time I saw Brian was at the Henniker farmer's market playing music and I was so happy to see him. We worked together many years ago in the emergency room in Concord. I was a new nurse and he was one of the kindest men and I will always remember his dry sense of humor. Lois, I think you may remember me and I am so sorry. Diane

Dear Lois and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Brian's passing. I have wonderful memories of working with him in the ED, and as "his nurse" after Peg left. Not to mention he was my own primary care doc. As I read his Obituary, I couldn't agree more with the words said about his character and his wonderful view of family, love, friends and life in general. I was out of town, so missed the Hopkinton celebration of his life. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I got to know Dr. Carroll while I was a psychologist for Central N.H. Community Mental Health Service and spent a good deal of time in the ER. It was a welcome relief to finally have a dedicated group of doctors as Emergency Room Doctors. Dr. Carroll was a soft spoken, caring person and physician along with the other ER docs. We helped each other out and consulted on patients. My condolences to Dr. Carroll's family and friends.

Dear Lois and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Carroll's passing. I feel so fortunate to have seen both of you at Dr. Trivellini's office a few months ago and to have had Dr. Carroll as our family physician for so many years. If the world were blessed with more people like the two of you what a better place it would be.

Dear Lois and family, my deepest sympathy at such a sad time. Brian was first my grandmother's doctor, then my own, and then my two children and then my boss. Working with him was a pleasure and knowing him personally rather than only in the capacity of my physician was even more of a pleasure. Your family is in our thoughts.

February 18, 2017

Dear Lois and Family, So sorry to hear about the passing of Brian. I remember your children attending Maple Street School and the humor of Andy. Dr. Carroll helped Pert start his journey on recovery from drinking which we were all so grateful. Thanks for all Dr Carroll and you give to the town of Hopkinton. Our prayers are with you. Dr Carroll was a kind and charming mentor to us both, Nita as an RN in the Concord OR, and I as an aspiring EMT from the Dunbarton Volunteer Fire Department. We remember him with gratitude for who he was and how he made the world a better place.

Our sympathy, love and prayers are being sent to the Carroll family.
Brian's loss is being felt by so many of the friends that he touched with a word, a smile or his humor.
We feel fortunate to have shared his friendship for many years. We always enjoyed our Winchester, N.H. and Cape Cod visits with him. His wit, great stories and treats from his garden made these times very special. Another fond memory was on a night when we were sharing a pizza at Embers. Brian introduced us to a wonderful family who showed great respect and love for him.
May you take comfort from the good times and memories you share. Love from Jack and Maureen Looney

Dear Lois,
We are very sorry for your loss. It was a great honor knowing Brian. I will miss his presence at the Member Sport Club. He was a very special person, his kindness and the respect for others was undeniable. My daughter Isabella shed some tears when I told her about Brian's loss, she remembers meeting him at Embers pizza restaurant and giving him a bracelet she had made.
