90, of Manchester by the Sea and Aiken, South Carolina, wife of the late Charles Sumner Bird, III, died Friday, July 27. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Marie (Merrill) Sears. During World War II, she was a nurse's aide and in the 1950s headed the cancer drive in Ipswich. Later, she ran Summerthing's fundraising. She volunteered at the MFA and at the Wang Center in Boston, the Whitney Museum in New York City, Beverly Boot Straps and Meals on Wheels in Aiken and Manchester by the Sea. She was a member of the Singing Beach Club, Myopia Hunt Club, and Aiken's Palmetto Golf Club. Throughout her life she spent a lot of time as beloved caretaker for many family members. She is survived by her three children, Peter S. Gardiner and Frankie Gardiner both of Vermont and Diana D. Bui of Washington DC; Five Grandchildren and Six Great Grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother, Francis P. Sears, Jr. and her sister Sarah Lyman Mills. A Memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Church, 24 Masconomo Street, Manchester by the Sea on Tuesday, August 7 at noon.
