FAITH WARNER Obituary

WARNER, Faith Killiam Died peacefully at the age of 98 in Southbury, CT on October 16, 2020 with family members close by. Born on March 12, 1922 in Boston, MA Faith was the youngest of three children of Mary Negley Scully Killiam and Paul Killiam of Cambridge, MA. Faith attended The Buckingham and Winsor Schools, graduating from the latter in 1940. She then attended Radcliffe College. In 1943, she married Davis Piersol Barnett and they had a daughter, Katharine (Trina) Barnett Grantham. The couple later separated. Faith taught music at the Buckingham School from 1948 to 1963 and spent many summers in Maine as Head Counselor at Alford Lake Camp. In June 1963, she married Lucian D. Warner of Woodbury, CT. The couple met at a Waltz Evening in Boston. They traveled extensively to Europe and Asia, camped the American west on horseback, hiked the Green Mountains, and skied the Rockies and Tuckerman's Ravine. Mr. Warner died in 1992. Faith was a woman of many talents and interests not the least of which was choral music. She was an avid participant in Chorus Pro Musica, Gilbert and Sullivan productions, and small madrigal groups in the Boston area. She was active and involved in the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, CT Choral Society, Berkshire Choral Institute, the Washington, CT. Friends of Music, Litchfield Children's Choir, Pomperaug Woods Life Care, Woodbury Historical Society, Glebe House Museum (Woodbury, CT), Pomperaug Garden Club, CT Botanical Society, and the National Society of Colonial Dames. She acted on her environmental concerns by serving a term on the Woodbury Inland Wetlands Agency and donating conservation easements on their farm in Woodbury, CT to the Flanders Nature Center. She was most famously noted for her exquisite decorations of natural dried plant materials and she lectured widely on the subject. Faith is remembered for her quick wit and humor, concern and love for others, amazing memory for poetry and love of words, musical interests and talent, pearls of wisdom, and above all a life well lived with exceptional high standards. She is survived by her daughter Katharine Barnett Grantham (Jesse) of Ojai, CA, grandchildren Christopher Grantham Ojai, CA., Mary Grantham Cook (Harper) and great-grandson William Henley Cook of Southern Pines, NC. In addition a niece, Lily Killiam Mitchel of Woodstock, VT, Ted Killiam (Lyn Cooley) of Guilford, CT., and Tom Killiam (Maite) of Gainesville, VA. There are four grandnieces and two grandnephews. She was predeceased in death by her brother Paul, Jr. and sister Mary Elizabeth Killiam Pilcher. No services are planned.

I just learned this morning, Thanksgiving morning 2020, of the death of lovely, wise Faith. She and Lucian were great friends and emotional support to me and my children the years we lived in Middlebury, Connecticut and most particularly after my own dear husband’s tragic death in 1983. In the many years since that time, we spent many visits in each others’ homes. Faith and Lucian attended my marriage ceremony some 7 plus years later to Al Scott in Tenant’s Harbor, Maine. We frequently visited Faith over the years. She was unfailing wise, fun and loving. She taught me a great deal about living a full life, loving one’s friends and family, music, the natural world and so much more. I will miss terribly her loving, lively presence but so grateful that she was our friend through so many decades of our life.

I sang with the Connecticut Choral Society for 15 years and Faith was our biggest “groupie”. I would love seeing her face in the audience. She was a great lady. My deepest sympathy to her family.

I remember Faith from my choral and Waterbury Symphony years. She was always loved. My heartfelt condolences to her loved ones.
