George Maintanis Obituary
GEORGE MAINTANIS, age 74, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 26, 2015. He was born on April 9, 1940 in Stamford, CT to the late Christo and Mary Maintanis. George was a 1958 graduate of Saint Basil's Preparatory School in Stamford where he played on the baseball and basketball teams. He spent most of his career as a teacher and sports coach at J.M.Wright Technical High School, and his passion for sports continued with the City of Stamford where he served as an Umpire and Referee.
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Maintanis, and is survived by his two daughters Karen Mocciae and her husband Michael, of Milford, and Christine Murray, also of Milford; three loving grandchildren; Dennis, Lauren and Courtney Murray. George is also survived by his two sisters, Joan Philippopoulos of Stamford and Christina Malloy and her husband Brien, of Stamford, and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive relatives and friends at the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford on Friday, March 6 from 4-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday, March 7th at 9:00 a.m. at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Avenue, Stamford. I last saw George at a reunion a few years ago and he was still the same George--wide grin, fun and laughter flowing out his eyes. He will be missed and long remembered. Condoences and prayers go out to all who were a part of his life.
