Graves Hewitt Obituary

Of South Natick. Loving husband of Gail Downing Hewitt; devoted father of two daughters and their spouses: Laura Hewitt Riley and C. Madison Riley III of Wellesley, and Susan Desha Stahl and Michael Stahl of Chicago; beloved grandfather of C. Madison Riley IV, Peter Graves Riley, Sarah Alden Riley, and Hannah Morgen Smith. Mr. Hewitt is also survived by his brother, Colby, of Marshfield, MA. Mr. Hewitt's first love was his family, from whom he derived endless joy. He was a leading insurance executive, having been Chairman and CEO of the Cameron and Colby Companies (later of the Hartford Insurance Group), including First State Insurance Company and New England Reinsurance Company, and most recently was CEO of HM Consulting Group. He taught Sunday School for 18 years at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Wellesley, in addition to serving as First Reader and Board member. At the time of his passing he was Chairman of the Board at Longyear Museum in Chestnut Hill. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in Mr. Hewitt's memory to Longyear Museum, 1125 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.

A wonderful Sunday school teacher!

To the Hewitt family:

It was my distinct pleasure and privilege to work with Graves on a major insurance coverage case throughout last summer. You may have heard him complain or, more likely, joke about the Uniroyal case. His professionalism and knowledge were obviously top notch. (He stood toe to toe with a renowned NJ trial attorney on cross-examination!). But more importantly he was a joy to work with. My colleagues and I certainly hoped to work with him again on a personal and professional level.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time, as are those of the attorneys with which I have shared this sad news.
