JAMES DUGGAN Obituary

DUGGAN, James Patrick "Jim" Of Brookline, Mass., and Glenbeigh, Ireland, oldest child born to the late Marjorie and James Duggan on April 18, 1953, passed away on October 22, 2018. Fourth generation Duggan born and raised in Brookline's Whiskey Point. Upon the birth of his own children, Jim proudly boasted of five generations of Duggans in Brookline. A graduate of Catholic Memorial High School, Boston College, and Suffolk University Law School, Jim was admitted to the bar in 1978. He ran a successful solo practice for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Claire Weiss Duggan, son Benjamin (Jacqueline), and daughter Maeve. Brother of Doris Duggan, Michael (Jane) Duggan, Maura (James) Tombeno, and Francis Duggan, brother-in-law to Robert (Susan) Weiss, and nephew to Geraldine Bearce, Patricia Clark, Martha Landers, and Bonnie Powell. Jim was adored by many nieces, nephews, cousins, clients, and friends, both here and abroad. Politically active and committed to his community, Jim was elected to the Brookline Town Meeting at the age of sixteen. He was an aide to Congressman Robert F. Drinan in 1973, Chairman of the Brookline Redevelopment Authority in 1977, and a delegate to the Democratic Mid-Term National Convention in 1978. A candidate for Brookline Town Selectman in 1990, he was instrumental in renovating Clark Park and building the new Lincoln School. Jim had a lifelong interest in history and sports, especially his beloved Boston Red Sox. He coached several of his children's youth sports teams and served as President of Brookline Youth Baseball. Upon his retirement, Jim followed his lifelong dream and bought a cottage in Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry, Ireland, where he devoted himself to golf. He never quite fixed his slice, but he was a proud member of Dooks Golf Club. He passed away in his cottage having played a round that day. Ravenous reader, brilliant orator, razor-sharp wit, loving husband, father, brother, and uncle, Jim will be sorely missed. Family and friends are invited to raise a glass and celebrate Jim's life at a reception from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, at the VineRipe Grill, Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course, Brookline. Memorial donations may be made to your local youth sports program or library.

God Bless, R.I.P., and our sincerest condolences. My father worked with Jimmy in the late 1970s at Ten Post Office Square. They shared a love of Brookline, the law, and politics. Jimmy was a great lawyer, friend, and human being. His great sense of humor, ready smile, and calm perspective on life were greatly appreciated. So sorry for your loss. He will be missed. Edmund Hurley Jr. and the entire Hurley family, Patsy, Dianne, and John.

I met Jim Duggan in September 1971 when we were both sophomores at BC. I signed up for a seminar course about the Federalist Papers because I didn't know that seminar courses were small classes and everybody had to have opinions.

I was convinced that I was the dumbest person in the room and had no opinions. I was, however, smart enough to realize that this Duggan kid had lots of opinions and if I sat next to him, I would have some cover.

I later learned that Jimmy always had opinions.

A truly remarkable person, I have long drawn inspiration from Jim's insatiable zest for life, the gusto with which he lived his, Jim's pragmatic optimism, and, of course, his easy but soaring laugh.

Gregarious, generous, out-going, wise, charismatic, curious, self-made, larger-than-life, brilliant, articulate, and definitely delightfully one-of-a-kind.

Thank you Jimmy for being a pillar of my youth, and dearest family friend for over 40 years.

With heartfelt sympathy to Jim's family - the twinkle in his eye - Claire, Ben, Maeve and the extended Duggan clan.
