Dear Aunt Mary, Janice, Rob, Joan, Mike, John, Sandy, Cathy and Kevin,
I don’t think it would offend the Bacon brothers (including my Dad) to say that Uncle Johnny was the Bacon we all (boy and girl cousins) wanted to emulate. He set the bar high, finishing college, not that common back then, and working hard to succeed in a tough business. Johnny was a great role model for all the Bacons.
(I’ve never been able to buy a gas range, telling any salesman who broached the topic that my Uncle wouldn’t allow it.)
As tough as this time of year will be for you, it reminds us of how kind Uncle Johnny and you were after our Dad died. You invited us to celebrate Christmas Eve in Norwood- we did that for quite a few years. You turned what could have been a sad time into many wonderful celebrations.
Putting the bike or the dollhouse together with Uncle Johnny on Christmas Eve was always an adventure. The instructions were impossible to decipher and we always found an extra bolt or bracket after we finished. I was certain Cathy’s new bike would unexpectedly collapse for lack of the crucial piece.
Uncle Johnny left us with many wonderful memories. We’ll miss him.
Love,
Chuck, Lynne and Rachel

Dear Mary,
May the good Lord, bless you and help you and your family through this sad time. We all know John is in heaven looking down hoping we will cheer up soon.
I am so glad John and I spoke last week and reminisced a bit. He was so positive on the phone that his health was improving that learning of his death was startling.
There is little need for me to tell you what a wonderful person John was. He was - smart, kind, generous, caring but with an ability to be tough when it was required. The world is a little brighter because John Joseph Bacon lived in it.
With my deepest sympathy,
Chet Messer
