Dear Mrs. McEwan and family,
It is with immense sadness that I learn of Dr. McEwan's passing. He was and shall always remain, in my memory and in my heart, a giant among men.
As a student at Silver Lake Regional High School in the class of 1998, I had a very close working relationship and friendship with Dr. McEwan. Serving as Student Council President and captain of two varsity sports teams, I was blessed to engage with Dr. McEwan often on student issues and striving to make our class and our school the very best. Under his leadership and vision, we did indeed make the class of 1998 and the Silver Lake school system the very best.
I recall vividly a final class meeting that Spring of '98 when Dr. McEwan addressed us and stated plainly that when we had arrived as sophomores during the transition of freshmen from the junior high to the high school, we were a troubled class and he was beside himself with concern and disappointment. Three years later he was proud to say that in his long and varied career in education, we had become a class apart from all others, the best and brightest he had ever known. And this had been achieved through the shared effort of his belief in us and our willingness to believe he was right. Rise to the occasion we did, with his unwavering commitment to us in all aspects of our formative education as students and young citizens.
There are many recollections and happy memories and points of pride I take in having known Dr. John McEwan. What I can say simply is that he was a wonderful and decent man, thoughtful and morally just, intellectually gifted and down-to-earth, entirely dedicated to his students and faculty and staff, caring for one's well-being and future, and a hugely impactful figure in my young life.
I was fortunate to see him a few times in the past decade when I worked for the state legislature and we'd run into one another at meetings and conferences on education. I only wish I could have told him one more time what he had meant to me and how much I respected and appreciated him. A man of faith, I know he is reveling in the plethora of students and friends and colleagues everywhere who are feeling the same and sharing their thoughts and prayers now.
May Dr. McEwan know eternal peace and pleasure and may God hold him in the palm of his hand.
My heartfelt condolences, prayers, and warm thoughts are with you all.
Respectfully,
Dan Sullivan

Dear Margaret & Family,
John was a strong leader for me through two high schools, as well as personal support for Dave and I with our grandsons. They loved him and even in their twenties still call him Silver Lake's Santa. Our prayers go out to your family.

Dear Margaret and family,
The world has lost a very special person. Mr. McEwan was my religion teacher for 3 years at Spellman and I cannot tell you how much I respected him and all he was. Whenever I would meet him around town years after graduation he always remembered who I was and who my friends were. His dedication was like none other. Rest in peace. And know that he is looking down on all of you with much love and pride. Love to you all.

Dearest Margaret, Heather, Frank, and family,
Since I met John in 1994, collaborated with him, traveled with him (including Disney rides at conferences), I have always marveled at John's energy, enthusiasm, and leadership qualities. However, I will remember his friendship and guidance most. What an amazing Renaissance Man who has impacted the lives of so many. I learned of John's passing while in Ireland, and said a prayer for him at Dingle Bay.
My deepest sympathies to each of you,

Dear Margaret & your family - what a wonderful and loving person John is! Even though 35+ years have passed since he taught me English or directed a play at Spellman that I was in, his wonderful zest for life still is in my memory. Spellman is a great place but even more it is the people like John that made that high school experience for me so great. My prayers are with you & your family during this time.

Mr. McEwan was first my teacher at Spellman, and then he became a friend. He always made time for students from the past. He never forgot anyone. He helped me in my quest to become a teacher, first while he was at Silver Lake and then when he was at Whitman Hansen. To his family, thank you for sharing him with all of his students. He was truly a blessed man and I was truly blessed to have known him. Rest in Peace Mr. McEwan.
