Joyce Harlow Obituary

HARLOW, Joyce Morgan Southard Brecht 78, beloved mother and friend, died on October 8, 2010. She was born September 1, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Frederick Reynolds Southard and Eleanor Millie Plumb Southard, both of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from DePauw University in 1954 and later earned a Masters degree in education from Boston University. On October 21, 1977, she married Eugene Harrison Harlow, who preceded her in death. For many years, she was an elementary school teacher in Massachusetts, Maryland, and Texas. In 1999, she was awarded "Teacher of the Year" at Bear Creek Elementary School in Katy, Texas. She had a passion for music, reading, writing, gardening, travelling, genealogy, and cherishing family and friends. She is survived by children Amy (Justin) Griswold of Houston, TX, Stephen (Loretta) Brecht of Houston, TX, David (Epp) Brecht of Arlington, MA, and Peter (Jennifer) Brecht of Charlottesville, VA. Survivors also include sister Jeanne (Bruce) Macomber of Lompoc, CA; grandchildren Stephanie, Grace, Joseph, Eleanor, Erik, Theodor, and Tristan; former spouse Warren (Barbara) Brecht of Stanardsville, VA; stepchildren Ann (Marvin) Zimmerman, Judith (Stephen) Huben, Robert (Gail) Harlow, George (Carole) Harlow; six step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held October 18 at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church (Houston), where she was a long-time choir member. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Southard Memorial Fund (1302 Waugh Drive, PMB 461, Houston, TX 77019) for the benefit of St. Michael's Church, Ilsington, Devonshire, England.
