My deepest sympathies to the entire family. We were all such good friends when we were 18 and when Merle was at Columbia. I visited a number of times at the end in Baltimore. Neither of these dear people gave up. Blessings to them and to their family. Irene

May his memory be for a blessing. He was a major influence on my scientific career -- an example I tried to emulate. I didn't know him personally but we always had nice chats at meetings and i wish I had gotten to know him better.
